The Italian defending world champion overtook pole-sitter Pedro Acosta on the first lap and maintained his lead to cross the finish line 1.189 seconds ahead of Martin, with Marc Marquez finishing in third place.
This victory marked Bagnaia’s eighth Grand Prix win of the season, his highest tally to date, and his first win at the Japan MotoGP. Bagnaia’s win came off the back of a successful performance in the sprint race on Saturday, which brought him 11 points closer to Martin in the overall standings. The next race on the MotoGP calendar is the Australia MotoGP at Phillip Island, scheduled to take place in two weeks’ time. Martin, who is aiming for his first world title, started the Japan MotoGP from 11th on the grid after a crash in qualifying. Despite starting from a challenging position, Martin finished in second place in the Grand Prix, expressing satisfaction with his performance. While Martin made a late push to narrow the gap to Bagnaia in the closing laps, he ultimately focused on securing points for his championship campaign.
Spanish rookie Pedro Acosta, who secured his first pole position in MotoGP, unfortunately slid out with 21 laps to go while running in second place behind Bagnaia. This disappointment was followed by a crash in the sprint race as well. Italy’s Enea Bastianini finished fourth in the Grand Prix and maintained his position as third in the overall standings, two points ahead of Marquez. Despite facing challenging conditions with threatening rain clouds, the race proceeded without precipitation affecting the outcome.
In the early stages of the race, Acosta held off Bagnaia briefly before the Italian rider made a successful move to take the lead.
