Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has launched a pioneering digital platform to oversee the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles in the emirate, marking a significant step forward in the region’s smart mobility landscape. The platform, known as AViTOMS, is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

AViTOMS is designed to manage all stages of autonomous vehicle deployment, from registration and permitting to trial supervision and commercial operations, ensuring a safe and efficient process. According to Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of ITC, the platform represents a major advancement in regulating and operating autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi, enhancing operational efficiency and safety standards.

Comprehensive Oversight through AViTOMS

The AViTOMS platform provides a centralized system for ITC to exercise comprehensive oversight of autonomous vehicle trials, enabling the centre to receive and review applications, assess companies’ readiness, and issue permits across four structured testing phases. This structured approach allows for real-time monitoring of operations and swift intervention when necessary, thereby enhancing response speed and coordination with relevant government entities.

AViTOMS features various smart tools to facilitate end-to-end operations management. These include a digital workflow system and interactive maps for real-time vehicle tracking, enabling authorities to monitor operational status and incidents effectively. The platform’s capabilities extend to secure, real-time data exchange among stakeholders, which strengthens oversight and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

The introduction of AViTOMS is expected to significantly enhance safety and efficiency in the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi. By providing a unified digital system, the platform enables intelligent oversight of every stage of autonomous vehicle deployment. According to the ITC, this not only improves operational performance but also ensures the highest safety standards, aligning with the emirate’s vision for a safe, smart, and sustainable transport ecosystem.

The development of AViTOMS underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to embracing future technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), positioning the emirate as a global hub for innovation in autonomous mobility. As the platform becomes fully operational, it is likely to attract companies and investors interested in developing and testing autonomous vehicles, further driving the growth of the smart mobility sector in the region.

Future Developments

As AViTOMS continues to evolve, it is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of autonomous mobility in Abu Dhabi. The next steps in the platform’s development are likely to involve further enhancements to its capabilities and potentially expanding its scope to cover additional aspects of autonomous vehicle deployment. While the exact timeline for these developments is uncertain, the ITC’s commitment to advancing the platform suggests that Abu Dhabi is poised to remain at the forefront of smart mobility innovation.

With the launch of AViTOMS, Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step towards realizing its vision for a futuristic transportation system. As the platform continues to mature, it is expected to provide valuable insights and data that will inform future policy decisions and technological advancements in the field of autonomous mobility.
