The Australian Test team is facing uncertainty over Steve Smith’s role as an opener in the upcoming five-match series against India. Despite finishing the last test season with a top six that coach Andrew McDonald believes will likely start the series, the batting order may see changes. Smith was moved to open the batting after David Warner’s retirement, but McDonald emphasized that no firm decisions have been made regarding Smith’s position.

During a radio interview, McDonald stated that discussions have been held about the team’s strategy for the upcoming series, including the possibility of shifting Smith’s position. Cameron Green’s success at number four adds complexity to the decision-making process. While Smith may not have performed exceptionally as an opener, Green’s impressive 174 not out against New Zealand solidifies his place in the team alongside other top batsmen.

McDonald reiterated the importance of having the best six batters in the team, highlighting the cohesive unit that finished the last season in New Zealand. Resting test players from the white-ball series against Pakistan may be considered to prioritize the upcoming series against India. The much-anticipated India series starts in Perth on Nov. 22, with matches in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Australia’s last Test series win against India was in 2014, making the upcoming series crucial for the team. McDonald emphasized the need for thorough preparation and a clean run for the players to excel against the tough opposition. The team’s focus on the series against India reflects their determination to reclaim victory and strengthen their position in international cricket.
