Gus Atkinson took five wickets as England beat Sri Lanka by 190 runs in the second Test at Lord’s, giving them a 2-0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka was set a challenging fourth-innings target of 483 but fell short with 292 runs, despite notable performances from Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, and captain Dhananjaya de Silva. Atkinson, who scored his maiden first-class hundred in England’s first innings, led the attack with 5-62, earning himself a place on the Lord’s honours board for the fifth time. He also became only the third Englishman to score a century and take five wickets in the same Test.

The match was a personal victory for Joe Root, who became the first England batsman to score hundreds in both innings of a Test match, setting a new record of 34 Test centuries. Sri Lanka now have to regroup quickly before the third Test at the Oval, Atkinson’s home ground, starts on Friday. Despite being dismissed for only 292 runs, Sri Lanka showed resilience, with Karunaratne and Chandimal scoring fifties before falling to England’s bowling attack. With a challenging target to chase, Sri Lanka struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at crucial moments.

The odds were heavily against Sri Lanka from the start, with a high fourth-innings winning total record. Root’s reprieve of Karunaratne early on Sunday proved to be crucial as England continued to chip away at the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Atkinson’s impressive bowling display and Root’s batting heroics helped England seal their seventh successive victory over Sri Lanka. The final moments of the match saw Atkinson completing his five-wicket haul by dismissing Sri Lanka’s Milan Rathnayake and Woakes ending the match by dismissing Lahiru Kumara.

England’s dominant performance in this Test match showcased their depth in both batting and bowling departments. Atkinson’s rapid rise in international cricket and Root’s record-breaking centuries highlighted England’s strengths on the field. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will need to analyze their performance and make strategic changes before the next Test match. Despite their strong individual performances, Sri Lanka’s inability to build partnerships and withstand England’s bowling attack led to their downfall in the match. As the series progresses, both teams will aim to make tactical adjustments to secure victories in the upcoming matches.
