Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects nearly 5% of adults worldwide, impacting their everyday life in various ways. MP Dr. Maryam Al Dhaen has highlighted the importance of raising awareness about mental health, especially in the context of ADHD, which often goes unnoticed in today’s distraction-dominated world. She compared the response to ADHD in society to “a whisper lost in the noise of a crowded room” and emphasized the need for immediate action.

Dr. Al Dhaen spoke about the significance of understanding ADHD not only for those directly affected but for society at large. She noted that ADHD typically starts in childhood and adolescence, with symptoms such as difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and disorganization often continuing into adulthood. These challenges can impact academic and professional success, strain personal relationships, and cause frustration for individuals dealing with the condition.

External factors like family stress and changes in educational environments can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, according to Dr. Al Dhaen. She also highlighted how modern technology, particularly smartphones and social media, adds to mental distractions, making daily tasks even more challenging for those with ADHD. Recognizing these contributing factors is crucial in addressing the needs of individuals affected by ADHD and providing them with effective support and resources.

Dr. Al Dhaen commended the Ministry of Interior for its efforts to assist inmates through expanded rehabilitation services, with a focus on the importance of reform centres. She emphasized the need for comprehensive health and psychological care in these centres to help reintegrate inmates back into society successfully. This approach not only benefits the individuals directly involved but also contributes to overall community well-being by reducing recidivism rates and promoting rehabilitation.

In conclusion, Dr. Al Dhaen’s address at the Second Bahrain Psychiatry Conference sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD and the importance of addressing mental health issues in society. By raising awareness, understanding the condition, and providing support through rehabilitation services, we can work towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for those affected by ADHD and other mental health conditions. It is crucial for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community members to work together to create a more empathetic and informed society that prioritizes mental health and well-being for all.
