The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has completed the main works for the Design and Build Project for the TSE Seasonal Storage Lagoons – Phase 1 in Doha, Qatar. This project is part of Ashghal’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and optimize the use of treated water and renewable water resources in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, which emphasizes the importance of treated sewage effluent (TSE).

According to Eng. Waled Al Ghoul, the project engineer from the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal, the first phase involved constructing five reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 22.5 million cubic meters, along with an evaporation pond with a capacity of 8.7 million cubic meters. These reservoirs will be supplied with treated water from the Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant through the rising main (D-Line).

TSE Seasonal Storage Lagoons Project: Enhancing Environmental Sustainability

The project aims to balance the usage of treated water throughout the year. During the winter season, surplus water is stored for reuse during the summer months when demand for treated water increases for irrigating green spaces and supplying fodder farms. The treated water can also be used in cooling systems and dust control at work sites, reducing the need for potable water.

However, the project’s benefits extend beyond water conservation. The storage lagoons have created an attractive natural environment for migratory birds, such as pink flamingos and plovers. This is a result of Ashghal’s commitment to implementing construction practices that enhance environmental sustainability within the project.

Project Infrastructure and Achievements

The project included the construction of a 6 km access road and a 25 km-long internal road network. A total of 8 km of water pipelines were also laid, including the necessary hydraulic components for supplying the reservoirs and transporting water between them. Additionally, 8 buildings were constructed for operation and maintenance, along with electrical substations and other facilities.

Ashghal achieved 10 million man-hours without a lost-time injury (LTI) during the implementation of the first phase of the project, thanks to the authority’s keenness to apply the highest standards of occupational safety and health. This achievement is notable, especially considering the deep excavation works carried out at depths of up to 10 meters below the ground.

Future Developments and Implications

The completion of the TSE Seasonal Storage Lagoons – Phase 1 project marks a significant step towards achieving Qatar’s environmental sustainability goals. The project’s success demonstrates the effectiveness of Ashghal’s efforts to promote the optimal use of treated water and renewable water resources. As the project moves forward, the next phase is expected to further enhance the capacity and efficiency of the TSE storage system.

For more information on Ashghal’s projects and initiatives, visit their official website. The successful implementation of this project is likely to have implications for future water management projects in Qatar, and its impact on the environment and water resources will be closely monitored. Meanwhile, stakeholders are awaiting further developments on the project’s subsequent phases and their potential to support Qatar’s long-term sustainability objectives.
