Doha, Qatar – The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced a temporary partial closure of Onaiza Interchange to facilitate essential maintenance work on the Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) network. The closure will affect traffic flow in four directions between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM on Friday, December 19, 2025. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly to avoid potential delays during this Onaiza Interchange maintenance period.

The impacted areas include approaches to the interchange from Lekhwair Intersection, Fire Station Intersection, Arch Interchange, and Lejbailat Interchange. Ashghal is urging drivers in these areas to utilize the free right lane to continue to their destinations, as indicated in published traffic maps. This proactive measure aims to minimize disruption while critical infrastructure repairs are undertaken.

Understanding the Onaiza Interchange Closure and TSE Network Maintenance

This temporary closure is specifically to allow for maintenance of the TSE network, a vital component of Qatar’s sustainable water management system. TSE is increasingly used for irrigation and industrial purposes, reducing the demand on potable water resources. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the continued reliability and efficiency of this network, preventing potential issues like leaks or blockages.

Importance of Infrastructure Maintenance in Qatar

Qatar has been undergoing significant infrastructure development in recent years, particularly in preparation for and following the FIFA World Cup 2022. This rapid expansion necessitates ongoing maintenance to preserve the quality and functionality of roads, utilities, and other public services. Ashghal routinely schedules such work, often during off-peak hours, to lessen the impact on daily life.

However, even with careful planning, temporary closures are sometimes unavoidable. Ashghal typically provides advance notice of these disruptions through official channels, including its website and social media platforms, to allow the public to adjust their travel plans. The use of clearly marked diversions, like the designated right lanes in this instance, is also standard practice.

The timing of the closure, between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM, suggests Ashghal is attempting to minimize disruption to peak traffic times. This period generally experiences lower traffic volume, reducing the number of commuters affected by the road closure. Nevertheless, drivers traveling during those hours should anticipate potential congestion and allow extra time for their journeys.

The TSE network is a key element of Qatar’s broader environmental sustainability goals. By effectively treating and reusing wastewater, the country reduces its reliance on desalination and conserves valuable freshwater resources. Maintaining the integrity of this network is therefore a priority for Ashghal and other relevant authorities. This maintenance work is part of a larger effort to improve Qatar’s infrastructure.

While the specific nature of the maintenance work hasn’t been detailed, it likely involves inspection, repair, or replacement of components within the TSE pipeline system located near or under the Onaiza Interchange. Such work can be complex and requires temporary suspension of traffic to ensure the safety of both workers and road users.

Looking ahead, Ashghal has not yet announced a timeframe for the completion of the maintenance work. Motorists are advised to continue monitoring Ashghal’s official channels for updates regarding the traffic diversion and any potential extensions to the closure. The authority will likely provide further information as the project progresses, including details on any subsequent phases of work that may impact traffic flow in the area.

It remains to be seen if any unforeseen complications will arise during the maintenance process, potentially leading to further disruptions. Road users should remain vigilant and adhere to all traffic signage and instructions provided by Ashghal personnel. The success of these operations relies on public cooperation and awareness.
