Argentina’s forward Lautaro Martinez was the star of the show as Argentina secured a 2-0 victory over Peru in the Conmebol 2024 Copa America tournament. Despite the absence of Lionel Messi due to injury, Martinez stepped up to score two goals and lead his team to victory. The win ensured Argentina’s place in the quarter-finals as Group A winners.

With Messi on the sidelines and coach Lionel Scaloni serving a suspension, Argentina made nine changes to their starting lineup. However, they were always in control against a lackluster Peru side that managed just one shot on goal during the match. Martinez’s first goal came just after half-time, courtesy of a beautiful through ball from Angel Di Maria. He calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Peru goalkeeper to put Argentina ahead.

Although Argentina had a chance to double their lead with a penalty in the 72nd minute, Leandro Paredes hit the woodwork, leaving the score at 1-0. Martinez then sealed the victory with a second goal in the 86th minute, extending his scoring streak for Argentina. Despite some controversy surrounding the goal, with replays showing Martinez pushing a defender in the build-up, the goal stood.

After the match, Martinez expressed his joy at playing for Argentina and his excitement for what is to come from the team. He has now scored in four consecutive appearances for his country and looks forward to more success in the tournament. Argentina will now face the runner-up from Group B in the quarter-finals, with Ecuador or Mexico likely to be their opponents.

In another Group A match, Canada held Chile to a 0-0 draw, which was enough to see the Canadians advance to the quarter-finals. Despite playing against the 2015 and 2016 Copa America champions, Canada put up a strong defensive performance to earn a valuable point. Chile’s task was made even harder after Gabriel Suazo was sent off in the first half.

Canada’s captain, Alphonso Davies, praised his team’s effort and determination in securing a spot in the knockout rounds. This is Canada’s first time in the Copa America tournament, and their progression to the last eight is a testament to their hard work and commitment. They will now face the winners of Group B in the quarter-finals, looking to continue their impressive run in the competition.

Overall, Argentina and Canada both put in strong performances to secure their places in the quarter-finals of the Conmebol 2024 Copa America tournament. Despite missing key players, both teams showed resilience and determination to come out on top in their respective matches. The quarter-finals promise to be exciting as Argentina and Canada face tough opponents in their quest for Copa America glory.
