Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal in extra time as Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 to secure their record 16th Copa America title. The match, which was plagued by security and crowd issues, saw Martinez net his fifth goal of the tournament to seal the victory for Argentina. This win marked the third consecutive major tournament triumph for Argentina, following their successes in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup. The celebrations, however, were bittersweet as Argentina captain Lionel Messi was forced off injured in the 66th minute while Angel Di Maria bid an emotional farewell to the national team.

The match was marred by chaos at the stadium entrance as fans encountered difficulties entering the venue, leading to organizers pointing fingers at supporters for trying to gain access without tickets. Despite the initial challenges, the game eventually kicked off after an 82-minute delay. As the match unfolded, Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba struck the post early on, but both teams struggled to find their rhythm. The first half saw limited goal-scoring opportunities, with Emiliano Martinez denying Colombia’s Jefferson Lerma from long range.

Argentina’s forward Angel Di Maria’s low ball into the box found Messi in the 20th minute, but the Argentine captain’s shot was saved by Camilo Vargas. The first half saw little action and failed to produce any breakthroughs. It wasn’t until the second half that the game saw some excitement, with Di Maria creating chances and Messi curling in a free-kick that narrowly missed the target. However, Messi’s night came to an abrupt end when he limped off the field in the 66th minute, leaving fans and teammates visibly distraught.

As the game entered extra time, both teams continued to battle for a breakthrough. A flick from Jorge Carrascal led to a half-chance for Miguel Borja, but it was Martinez who ultimately stole the show with a clinical finish to secure the win for Argentina. Leandro Paredes’ tackle in midfield set up a swift counter-attack, with Giovani Lo Celso providing the assist for Martinez, who made no mistake in front of goal. The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among the Argentine players, with Di Maria, Messi, and Nicolas Otamendi lifting the trophy in triumph.

The victory marked a historic moment for Argentina, as they clinched their 16th Copa America title and continued their reign as one of South America’s football powerhouses. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced throughout the tournament, including Messi’s injury and the chaotic scenes at the stadium entrance, Argentina’s resilience and determination ultimately saw them emerge victorious. The win also served as a fitting farewell for Di Maria, who bid an emotional goodbye to the national team following a successful international career. As the celebrations continue, Argentina looks ahead to their next challenges with renewed confidence and belief in their ability to compete at the highest level.
