On the women’s side, last tournament’s runners-up Argentina advanced to the semi-finals with a dominant 3-0 win over the Netherlands, keeping their hopes of making the final alive. They will face Italy in the semi-final, while Spain, aiming for a sixth consecutive title, also reached the top four after defeating Sweden 2-0. Spain will take on Portugal in their semi-final match. In the 9-16 play-offs, Belgian women defeated Egypt without dropping a set, while the USA lost to Denmark 1-2.

In other matches, Uruguay boosted their hopes of finishing strong by defeating Germany 2-1, while Japan handed Chile a 2-0 defeat in an exciting tie.
