The Arab Book Award will announce its winners on January 27, 2026, recognizing outstanding contributions to Arab intellectual and literary production. This third iteration of the award, valued at USD 1 million, saw participation from researchers in 41 countries, according to organizers. The ceremony, to be held in Doha, Qatar, will honor both individual books and lifetime achievements across a diverse range of knowledge fields.

Dignitaries, academics, and intellectuals from throughout the Arab world are expected to attend the crowning ceremony. The award, established in 2023 under the patronage of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, aims to promote cultural diplomacy and support the development of Arab thought. This year’s focus included thoughtful and economic studies, alongside other specialized areas.

Broadening Scope of the Arab Book Award

The Arab Book Award’s scientific committee noted a significant increase in both the volume and quality of submissions this year. This growth reflects a widening interest in the award and its mission to celebrate Arabic language scholarship. The award’s structure divides recognition between a single book award and an achievement award, distributed across five knowledge domains.

Areas of Focus in 2026

This year’s award cycle specifically highlighted several areas of study. Literary and critical studies of Arab heritage up to the end of the 10th Hijri century were a key component, alongside research in social and philosophical studies. Additionally, the award dedicated a portion of its focus to historical studies covering Arab and Islamic history from the end of the sixth Hijri century to the end of the twelfth Hijri century.

The domain of Sharia sciences and Islamic studies centered on the Prophetic biography and Hadith studies. In the field of linguistics, the award prioritized the verification of linguistic texts. This emphasis on textual accuracy underscores the importance of preserving and understanding the nuances of the Arabic language.

Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad, Media Advisor for the award, highlighted the particularly competitive level of submissions in literary criticism and historical studies. The judging process adhered to a strict timetable and employed meticulous procedures to ensure fairness, transparency, and scientific rigor, according to the award organizers.

Beyond the awards themselves, a specialized scientific symposium will be held concurrently with the ceremony. This symposium will feature prominent writers and researchers discussing the role of the Arab book and its connection to cultural identity. The event is intended to foster dialogue and reinforce the award’s position as a supporter of intellectual output.

The Arab Book Award is also actively engaged in cultural diplomacy, undertaking tours to various Arab capitals. These tours aim to connect with writers and innovators and expand the award’s reach. Recent engagement has included collaborations with cultural and academic institutions, as well as linguistic academies, in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

The award’s impact extends beyond recognizing existing scholarship; it also seeks to stimulate further research and creative work within the Arab world. The initiative aligns with Qatar’s broader efforts to promote cultural understanding and intellectual exchange. The focus on diverse fields, including Islamic studies and history, demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive intellectual development.

Looking ahead, the award’s organizers will begin accepting nominations for the next cycle following the January 27th ceremony. The specific knowledge domains for the next iteration are expected to be announced in the coming months, and the continued high level of participation will be a key indicator of the award’s ongoing success. The evolving focus of the award suggests a dynamic approach to recognizing and supporting Arab intellectual contributions.
