The 3rd ALECSO Forum for Twinning Arab Universities kicked off on Wednesday at Sohar University in North Al Batinah Governorate, Oman. This significant event is a collaboration between the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO), and the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The forum, held under the auspices of Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, highlights the growing emphasis on integrating educational strategies with the needs of the labour market.

## Enhancing Educational Strategies through Collaboration

The forum’s primary focus is on the concept of the “Productive University,” an educational strategy that seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Dr. Al Mahrouqi explained that this approach is grounded in understanding the current societal realities and global challenges. By doing so, it aims to foster an educational environment that is more responsive to the needs of the labour market. The Productive University concept is built on linking theoretical foundations with practical skills, thereby enhancing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

### The Role of Universities in the Labour Market

One of the key discussions during the forum revolved around the skills and knowledge that the labour market currently seeks from university graduates. Experts from various educational institutions participated in this dialogue, sharing insights on how universities can better align their curricula with the demands of the industry. This includes not only imparting technical skills but also nurturing soft skills that are increasingly valued by employers.

## Fostering Partnerships and Innovation

The forum also aimed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences among participants, with a view to launching initiatives that promote joint scientific research, development, and innovation. By bringing together stakeholders from the academic, governmental, and industrial sectors, the event sought to strengthen partnerships that are crucial for driving progress in these areas. An Arab initiative to enhance cooperation among universities in developing their curricula and integrating them with production and service institutions was also on the agenda.

### Global Models and Best Practices

During the first day of the forum, several working sessions were dedicated to exploring global models of productive universities and the dimensions that define them. Participants examined successful case studies and discussed how these models could be adapted to the Arab context. The sessions also touched upon the role of universities in supporting the industrial sector, highlighting the need for more collaborative approaches between academia and industry.

## Conclusion

The 3rd ALECSO Forum for Twinning Arab Universities represents a significant step towards redefining the role of higher education in the Arab world. By focusing on the Productive University concept and fostering collaboration between universities, industry, and government, the forum has laid the groundwork for meaningful change. As the event continues, it is expected to yield valuable insights and recommendations that will contribute to the development of more responsive and effective educational strategies. The outcomes of this forum will be eagerly awaited by educators, policymakers, and industry leaders across the region, as they hold the potential to shape the future of higher education and its contribution to societal development.
