In Albania, wildfires have been spreading rapidly, reaching even the northern part of the country. The EU has stepped in to provide assistance to help tackle the fires that have been blazing for three weeks now. The blazes initially started in southern Albania but have since moved to the north, with new fires reported in districts such as Diber and Elbasan. Due to the remote mountainous terrain, emergency services have faced challenges in reaching affected areas, prompting the government to seek help from the European Commission’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre. As an EU Civil Protection Mechanism member, Albania can receive assistance from other countries in times of disaster. In response to the wildfires, Canadair planes from Greece have arrived to assist in extinguishing the flames.

Albania’s firefighting capabilities have come under scrutiny, with a State Supreme Audit revealing old and poorly maintained fire engines and inactive helicopters within the Defence Ministry. Despite these challenges, the use of drones, such as the Bayraktar drones employed by the police, have helped in identifying and assessing fire hotspots from above. This aerial perspective has aided in developing effective strategies to control the fires. Given Albania’s high temperatures and landscape, the country is particularly susceptible to summer wildfires, which on average burn 10 thousand hectares of land annually. The use of drones, coupled with external assistance, is crucial in efforts to combat and contain the ongoing wildfires plaguing the country.

As the wildfires continue to spread in Albania, the impact on the environment and local communities becomes more severe. The EU’s response, through the provision of resources and support, highlights the importance of international cooperation in managing natural disasters. The utilization of Canadair planes from Greece underscores the need for swift action and collaboration in addressing such crises. The reliance on drones for aerial surveillance showcases the evolving technology being utilized in firefighting efforts, enhancing the effectiveness of response strategies. Albania’s vulnerability to wildfires underscores the need for investments in modernizing and maintaining firefighting equipment and resources to better prepare for future emergencies.

As the fires rage on, the importance of sustainable strategies for preventing and managing wildfires in Albania becomes increasingly evident. The collaboration between the government, EU, and other countries demonstrates the significance of collective efforts in responding to natural disasters and mitigating their impact. The use of drones for surveillance offers a promising tool for enhancing firefighting capabilities and improving response times. Efforts to modernize and upgrade firefighting equipment will be crucial in bolstering Albania’s resilience to future wildfires, as the country continues to contend with the threat of annual blazes. Through ongoing cooperation and innovation, Albania can better protect its environment and communities from the devastation caused by wildfires.
