Doha, Qatar – The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced a temporary Al Wakra Intersection closure for essential maintenance work. The closure will affect traffic flow during the late-night hours of February 12th and 13th, 2026, impacting commuters traveling to and from Al Wakra and surrounding areas. Ashghal is coordinating with the General Directorate of Traffic to minimize disruption during this period.

The Al Wakra Intersection will be fully closed from midnight to 5:00 AM on both Thursday and Friday, February 12th and 13th, 2026. However, Ashghal has confirmed that all right-turn lanes at the intersection will remain open to traffic, providing alternative routes for drivers. This proactive measure aims to maintain connectivity while critical repairs are undertaken.

Understanding the Al Wakra Intersection Closure

The planned closure is necessary to facilitate maintenance work on the intersection itself. While Ashghal has not detailed the specific nature of the repairs, infrastructure maintenance is a routine part of ensuring the long-term safety and efficiency of Qatar’s road network. This type of preventative work helps avoid more extensive and disruptive repairs in the future.

Traffic Diversion Routes

Motorists approaching the Al Wakra Intersection from Doha, Al Wakra city, Ras Abu Fontas Street, and Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Street are advised to utilize the available right-turn lanes. Ashghal has published a traffic diversion map, available through official channels, to guide drivers along these alternative routes. Following the designated diversions is crucial for minimizing delays.

Additionally, drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra travel time during the closure period. The General Directorate of Traffic will be deploying personnel to assist with traffic management and ensure smooth flow along the diversion routes. Real-time traffic updates will likely be available through the Ministry of Interior’s social media channels and traffic apps.

Impact on Commuters and Local Businesses

The late-night timing of the closure is intended to lessen the impact on peak-hour traffic. However, individuals traveling during these hours, particularly those relying on public transportation that utilizes the intersection, should anticipate potential delays. Local businesses in the immediate vicinity of the Al Wakra Intersection may also experience reduced activity during the closure period.

In contrast to larger-scale road construction projects, this temporary closure is focused on targeted maintenance. This suggests a relatively quick turnaround, minimizing long-term disruption. The focus on keeping right-turn lanes open demonstrates Ashghal’s commitment to maintaining a degree of accessibility throughout the work.

Qatar has been undergoing significant infrastructure development in recent years, particularly in preparation for major international events. This includes ongoing improvements to its road network, with a focus on enhancing capacity and safety. Ashghal regularly undertakes such maintenance projects to ensure the continued reliability of these vital transportation arteries. Road improvements and traffic management are key priorities.

Looking ahead, Ashghal anticipates completing the maintenance work within the scheduled timeframe. Motorists should continue to monitor official channels for any updates or extensions to the closure. The success of this operation will depend on driver compliance with the diversion routes and adherence to traffic regulations. Further announcements regarding future maintenance projects and road closures will be made as needed.
