In a thrilling AFC Champions League Elite match in Doha, Al Sadd secured a 1-0 victory over Persepolis thanks to Mateus Uribe’s late first-half goal and Meshaal Barsham’s heroics in goal. This win propelled Felix Sanchez’s side to seven points in the standings, holding onto third place. The Al Hilal and Al Ahli Saudi FC are leading the West Zone standings with nine points each. Despite a tough match, Sanchez praised his team’s determination and solid defense that helped them earn three crucial points. On the other hand, Persepolis coach Juan Carlos Garrido expressed disappointment in his team’s finishing as they squandered multiple chances during the game, resulting in their slip to 10th place in the standings.

The match began with both teams attempting to gain early control, with Boualem Khoukhi and Omid Alishah testing the goalkeepers early on. Al Sadd dominated possession and pressed for a breakthrough, with Guilherme Torres and Lucas Joao missing key opportunities to score. Persepolis had their own chances, but Barsham’s excellent saves denied their attempts. The breakthrough finally came in the 45+2 minute when Uribe found the net following a corner, giving Al Sadd the lead. Despite Joao and Alishah’s efforts to equalize, Barsham made crucial saves to deny Persepolis, while Al Sadd created more chances to extend their lead.

In the second half, Persepolis pushed hard for an equalizer, with Barsham making spectacular saves to maintain Al Sadd’s lead. Soroush Rafiei and Alishah came close with powerful shots, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Al Sadd continued to threaten Persepolis’ defense, with Tarek Salman and Paulo Otavio testing Guendouz in goal. Persepolis dominated possession midway through the second half, with Barsham coming to Al Sadd’s rescue with crucial saves. Despite their efforts, Persepolis failed to convert their chances, with Alishah’s last-gasp attempt hitting the crossbar in the dying moments.

Al Sadd’s victory means they will now face Al Wasl in an away game in Dubai, while Persepolis will host Al Gharafa in their next fixture. With this important win, Al Sadd has boosted their chances of advancing to the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League. The team’s solid defense and determination, along with Barsham’s heroics in goal, were key factors in securing the victory over Persepolis. As the tournament progresses, Felix Sanchez will be looking to build on this win and continue their impressive form in the competition. On the other hand, Persepolis will need to work on their finishing to bounce back from this disappointing result and climb up the standings in the AFC Champions League.
