Khalil bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi, the President of the Qatar Table Tennis Association, has been re-endorsed as the President of the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) for the next electoral cycle (2025-2028). This decision was made during the General Assembly held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on the sidelines of the 27th Asian Championship. Al Mohannadi was the only candidate for the presidency and secured his position after the nomination period closed in August. He first assumed the role in October 2021, making him the first Arab and Qatari to hold this prestigious position since the Federation’s establishment in 1972.

During his acceptance speech, Al Mohannadi expressed gratitude to the Kazakh Federation and its President for their excellent organisation of the championship. This event marked the first time the tournament was hosted in Central Asia, and it was attended by representatives from 31 member countries, meeting the legal quorum required for the elections. The General Assembly also conducted elections for Vice Presidents and Regional Deputies and reviewed reports submitted by various committees, including financial audits and updates on regional activities.

Key achievements of the Federation from 2021 to 2024 were highlighted during the assembly, including the development of table tennis in Asia and enhanced cooperation among member states. Al Mohannadi also announced the launch of the Asian Table Tennis Union Academy in partnership with Aspire Academy, which will focus on improving junior talent and human resource efficiency. Future championships were confirmed, with Uzbekistan and North Korea set to host major events, and China assigned to organise the Asian Cup from 2025 to 2027.

Al Mohannadi’s re-endorsement as the President of the ATTU signifies the continued confidence and support from member countries in his leadership. Under his guidance, the Federation has made significant strides in promoting the sport of table tennis across Asia and fostering collaboration among nations. The establishment of the Asian Table Tennis Union Academy demonstrates a commitment to developing young talent and enhancing the overall efficiency of the sport in the region.

The General Assembly in Astana provided a platform for member countries to come together, discuss important issues, and make decisions that will shape the future of table tennis in Asia. The successful organisation of the event in Central Asia reflects the growing popularity and reach of the sport in the region. With the upcoming championships in Uzbekistan and North Korea, as well as the Asian Cup in China, there are exciting opportunities for players and fans to come together and celebrate the sport on a global stage.

As the first Arab and Qatari to lead the ATTU, Al Mohannadi’s presidency brings a unique perspective and leadership style to the Federation. His re-endorsement for the next electoral cycle signifies the trust and confidence that member countries have in his vision and capabilities. With a focus on youth development and strategic partnerships, the Federation is poised for continued growth and success under his leadership. As table tennis continues to gain popularity and momentum in Asia, the ATTU plays a crucial role in promoting the sport and fostering collaboration among member states.
