Ayesha Al Mehairi, a rifle para shooter from the UAE, made history as the first Emirati woman to qualify for the Paralympics in Tokyo 2020. Trained at the Dubai Club for People of Determination, she is now preparing for her second Paralympics at Paris 2024, where she will compete in the R4 – 10m air rifle standing SH2 and R5 – 10m air rifle prone SH2 events. Al Mehairi will be one of five shooters representing the UAE at the Shooting Para Sport competitions at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre on the outskirts of Paris.

With her sights set on finishing in the top 8 of her competition in Paris, Al Mehairi is driven by self-belief and determination. Despite her initial lack of expectations at Tokyo 2020, where she emphasized gaining experience and controlling her emotions, she now plans to make a mark in Paris after earning her Paralympic qualifications in Peru and at the Lima 2023 World Championships. Having initially pursued Boccia, the switch to Shooting Para Sport was seamless for Al Mehairi, who found joy and challenge in the sport.

Over the past five years, Al Mehairi has earned four international medals, including one gold, two silver, and one bronze, in competitions such as World Cups held in France and the UAE. Despite the challenges faced by wheelchair-bound athletes, including long flights and training, she acknowledges the support provided by the Dubai Club and the UAE government in creating awareness and offering platforms for persons with physical impairments to excel in sports. Through accessible transport, venues, coaches, and support staff, she believes more Para athletes are able to develop and fulfill their dreams.

Al Mehairi credits her success to meticulous planning and a structured schedule that guides her towards her goals. With her final preparations underway in Turkey for Paris 2024, she remains focused and determined to leave a mark in the upcoming Paralympics. As she continues to break barriers and inspire others, Al Mehairi stands as a shining example of determination, resilience, and the power of self-belief in achieving one’s dreams.
