The Governorate of Dhofar in Oman is set for improved connectivity and safety with a significant road maintenance project underway. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has allocated RO 1.5 million to revitalize the 44-kilometer Al Ma’mura-Taqah road, a crucial artery linking key wilayats within the region. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to developing robust infrastructure and supporting economic growth in Dhofar.

Enhancing the Al Ma’mura-Taqah Road: A RO 1.5 Million Investment

This substantial project focuses on improving a vital transportation link between Salalah and Taqah, two important areas within the Dhofar Governorate. The work will not only address existing wear and tear but also proactively enhance the road’s capacity and safety features. Eng. Omar Ahmed Muflih, Director of the Road Maintenance Department at the Directorate General of Roads and Land Transport in Dhofar Governorate, confirmed the details of the initiative to the Oman News Agency (ONA).

The project’s scope is comprehensive, aiming for a holistic upgrade of the entire route. It’s a key component of the broader efforts to improve road infrastructure in Dhofar, making travel smoother and more secure for residents and visitors alike.

Key Components of the Road Improvement Project

The RO 1.5 million investment will be distributed across several crucial areas of improvement. A significant portion, approximately 11 kilometers on both sides of the road, will receive a new asphalt layer, starting from the Al Ma’mura roundabout in Salalah and extending to the Taqah roundabout. This resurfacing will address potholes, cracks, and general deterioration, providing a more comfortable and efficient driving experience.

However, the project extends beyond simply resurfacing the road. It also includes vital restorative work on three key roundabouts: Hamran, Nashib, and Taqah. These roundabouts are critical junctions, and their refurbishment will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Furthermore, the project prioritizes road safety through the installation of:

  • Guardrails along vulnerable stretches of the road.
  • Clear and reflective road markings to delineate lanes and guide drivers.
  • New and updated sign posts to provide essential information and warnings.

These additions are designed to minimize accidents and ensure a safer journey for all road users.

Boosting Connectivity and Economic Activity

The Al Ma’mura-Taqah road is more than just a transportation route; it’s a lifeline for communities and businesses in the Dhofar Governorate. Improving this road will have a ripple effect, easing connections between Salalah and Taqah and fostering greater economic activity.

The enhanced road will facilitate the movement of goods and services, supporting local industries and trade. It will also make it easier for residents to access employment opportunities, healthcare, and education. This is particularly important in a region as geographically diverse as Dhofar.

Timeline and Future Implications for Travel in Salalah

The Ministry has set a completion date of November 2026 for the project. This timeframe allows for thorough and high-quality work, ensuring the long-term durability of the improvements. While some temporary disruptions may occur during construction, the ultimate goal is to provide a significantly improved Salalah road network for years to come.

The project aligns with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology’s broader vision of establishing a safe and integrated road network throughout Oman. This network is seen as essential for supporting both urban and social development, as well as driving economic growth and improving access to vital services. The focus on Dhofar highlights the region’s importance as a growing tourism destination and a key contributor to the national economy.

A Commitment to Dhofar’s Development

The investment in the Al Ma’mura-Taqah road demonstrates the Omani government’s ongoing commitment to the development of the Dhofar Governorate. By prioritizing infrastructure improvements, the Ministry is laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth and a higher quality of life for residents.

This project isn’t just about fixing a road; it’s about connecting communities, facilitating trade, and ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone who travels through this vital region. The completion of this work in November 2026 will be a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of Oman’s transportation infrastructure.

For those planning travel to or within Dhofar, staying updated on road conditions and potential disruptions during the project period is recommended. Further information can be obtained from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and local news sources.
