New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel led his team to a historic 3-0 Test series sweep in India with a thrilling 25-run victory in the third Test in Mumbai. Patel claimed six wickets in the match as India was bowled out for 121 while chasing 147 for victory. This victory marked the first Test series win for New Zealand on Indian soil, a feat achieved under the leadership of Tom Latham in the absence of senior batsman Kane Williamson.

In a post-match interview, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma took full responsibility for the team’s performance, calling it a “low point” in his career. Sharma admitted that he had not been at his best as a leader and a batsman throughout the series. This defeat was the first time India had been swept in a Test series at home since 1999-2000 and the first time they were beaten 3-0 at home. The Black Caps’ remarkable turnaround from a 2-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka made this victory even more special.

Ajaz Patel, who was born in Mumbai, ended with a match-haul of 11 wickets and was named player of the match for his outstanding performance. The left-arm spinner had previously created history at the Wankhede Stadium by claiming all 10 wickets in a Test innings in 2021. Despite a challenging chase on a turning pitch, New Zealand’s bowlers dominated India’s top order, reducing them to 29-5 before Rishabh Pant’s valiant 64 provided some hope for the hosts.

Glenn Phillips and Ajaz Patel’s crucial wickets helped New Zealand secure the win, with Ajaz finishing the innings by dismissing Washington Sundar. Will Young’s contributions with the bat, scoring 71 and 51 in the two innings, proved pivotal for New Zealand’s success. Young was also named player of the series for his total of 244 runs. The victory not only sealed a historic series sweep but also marked India’s first Test series loss at home in 12 years.

In conclusion, New Zealand’s remarkable performance in the Test series against India showcased their resilience and determination. The Black Caps’ victory under new captain Tom Latham without key players like Kane Williamson demonstrated their depth and strength as a team. Ajaz Patel’s exceptional bowling and historic achievements in the series were instrumental in New Zealand’s success. On the other hand, India’s struggles and shortcomings throughout the series highlighted the need for introspection and improvement in their performance.
