Travellers in the United Arab Emirates should prepare for potential disruptions as low-cost carrier Air Arabia has issued a warning about possible flight delays due to adverse weather conditions. The airline announced the alert on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, citing forecasts for heavy rainfall and strong winds across the country. The disruption primarily affects flights to and from Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi airports.

The warnings come as a significant weather system is impacting the region, bringing with it the possibility of widespread flooding and hazardous travel conditions. Passengers are advised to check the airline’s website and social media channels for the latest updates on their flight schedules. Authorities are preparing for substantial rainfall, anticipating it will be among the heaviest recorded in the UAE.

Understanding the UAE Flight Delay Situation

Air Arabia’s proactive warning reflects a growing awareness of the potential for weather-related travel disruptions in the UAE. While the country is accustomed to hot and sunny conditions, it is also periodically affected by strong storms originating in the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean. These systems often bring intense rainfall within a short period, exceeding the capacity of infrastructure in some areas.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued multiple alerts, highlighting the risk of flash floods in wadis and low-lying areas. These alerts cover various regions, including parts of Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Sharjah. The severity of the forecast prompted authorities to initiate precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Impact on Affected Airports

Sharjah Airport, a major hub for Air Arabia, is particularly vulnerable given its geographical location. The airport released a statement verifying they are working closely with airlines and meteorological agencies. Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) are also monitoring the situation closely, though they have not yet announced proactive flight adjustments.

Passengers already in transit or planning to travel to these airports should anticipate longer processing times and potential crowding as airlines manage the disruption. It’s important to note that even if a flight isn’t officially delayed, airlines may implement ground stops to manage air traffic flow during severe weather.

The Role of Rainfall Intensity

The current weather system is expected to bring unusually high rainfall intensity to the UAE. According to meteorological data, some areas could receive over 100mm of rainfall within 24 hours. This far exceeds the typical rainfall amounts for this time of year and could overwhelm drainage systems.

While the UAE has invested heavily in infrastructure improvements to cope with increased rainfall, the sheer volume expected presents challenges. The intensity also raises concerns about visibility for pilots and the potential for aquaplaning on runways. This makes operational decisions regarding plane movement more critical.

Additionally, increased humidity associated with the storm could contribute to low cloud ceilings, further restricting flight operations. Airport ground staff are being briefed on safety procedures related to working in wet and windy conditions.

Travel Insurance and Passenger Rights

Passengers affected by flight delays should review their travel insurance policies. Comprehensive policies may cover expenses incurred due to disruptions, such as accommodation, meals, and rebooking fees. However, coverage varies, so understanding the terms and conditions is crucial.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) provides guidelines on passenger rights in cases of flight disruptions, but these rights are largely dependent on the airline’s specific terms and conditions. Passengers should consult Air Arabia’s policy for information on compensation or assistance in case of significant delays or cancellations. Understanding airline policies regarding conditions of carriage is vital.

In contrast to some countries, the UAE does not have strict, legally mandated compensation rules for weather-related travel disruptions. Airlines are generally expected to provide reasonable care for passengers, but the level of assistance can differ.

Beyond flight delays, road travel is also expected to be significantly impacted, particularly in areas prone to flooding. The Ministry of Interior is urging residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall periods. They also advise against driving through flooded areas.

The impact on public transportation systems, including buses and metro lines, remains uncertain. Authorities responsible for public transport are monitoring conditions and will announce any service adjustments as needed. Some school closures and remote working arrangements are already being implemented by various entities.

Looking Ahead: Forecast and Potential Mitigation

The NCM forecasts that the heaviest rainfall will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 20th and 21st, 2024, with conditions gradually improving by Thursday. However, the duration and intensity of the rainfall remain subject to change and will be closely monitored. The persistent unstable weather patterns are linked to a larger-scale atmospheric disturbance.

Airports and airlines are collaborating to minimize disruption by proactively rescheduling flights and optimizing air traffic management. This includes allocating additional resources for ground handling and customer support. The focus is on ensuring passenger safety while maintaining operational efficiency as much as possible.

Further assessments of infrastructure resilience will be undertaken following the storm to identify areas for improvement. The event emphasizes the increasing need for climate-adaptive infrastructure in the UAE, especially considering the rising frequency of extreme weather events globally. Passengers should continue to check for updates on UAE weather reports periodically.

It’s anticipated that the full extent of the disruption – number of flights affected, duration of delays – will become clearer by Wednesday evening as the weather system moves through the region. Monitoring the official statements from Air Arabia, the GCAA, and the NCM will be essential for travellers throughout this period.
