Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the world of sports, and England Women’s cricket coach Jon Lewis is embracing this technology to aid in team selection. Lewis, a former England paceman, is using AI to assist in making decisions about squad composition, team balance, and in-game match-ups between players. By sending multiple different line-ups to London-based PSi, the system runs about 250,000 simulations per team, analyzing all possible permutations that could occur during a game.

Despite still preferring a “people-first approach,” Lewis acknowledges the value that data can bring to the decision-making process. By providing an objective view of potential outcomes and previous results, AI helps with borderline decisions in terms of selection and match-ups. Speaking about the success of using AI, Lewis mentioned a crucial selection during last season’s Women’s Ashes series against Australia, where the technology played a key role in helping the team draw the multi-format series.

Jon Lewis also mentioned his conversation with England’s rugby union coach Steve Borthwick, who has also utilized the PSi model in his coaching. The success of AI in cricket has been evident in England’s performance against Australia, where strategic decisions based on the analysis provided by AI helped the team win the T20 series and regain momentum in the Ashes. This highlights the potential benefits of incorporating AI into sports coaching, providing teams with a competitive edge.

The use of AI in sports is not limited to cricket, with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach recognizing its potential in identifying talented athletes from around the world. AI can also offer personalized training methods to a wider range of athletes, enhancing their performance and maximizing their potential. As technology continues to evolve, its integration into sports coaching is becoming increasingly common, with AI playing a crucial role in decision-making and strategy development.

The collaboration between Jon Lewis and PSi showcases how technology can be harnessed to improve team performance and competitiveness in sports. By leveraging AI to analyze data and predict outcomes, coaches can make informed decisions that optimize team composition and enhance match-ups. The success of England Women’s cricket team in utilizing AI during the Ashes series underscores the impact that technology can have on sports coaching, highlighting its potential to revolutionize the way teams prepare and compete.

As AI continues to shape the landscape of sports coaching, its role in enhancing performance and decision-making cannot be underestimated. By embracing technology and utilizing data-driven insights, coaches like Jon Lewis are able to make strategic decisions that give their teams a competitive edge. With AI’s ability to analyze vast amounts of information and simulate various scenarios, teams can benefit from a more sophisticated approach to team selection and game strategy, ultimately leading to improved performance and results on the field.
