The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recently hosted a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between US-based satellite launch company ABL Space Systems and Etlaq spaceport. The signing took place in Muscat and was attended by CAA President Naif Al-Abri and Ana Escrogima, the United States Ambassador to Oman. The MoU aims to explore launching ABL’s RS1 launch vehicle from the Etlaq Spaceport, which is expected to become operational in 2027. The spaceport, located at 18-degree latitude, will provide wide orbital access from sun synchronous to low inclination orbits and will position Oman as a regional and global leader in the space industry.

The initial focus of the project will be on evaluating local logistics and site construction, as well as developing regulatory and export control frameworks with both the US and Oman governments. The Etlaq Spaceport is strategically located near a commercial airport and a deepwater port in Duqm, providing critical logistical capabilities to support satellite missions. This partnership between ABL and Etlaq is seen as a significant milestone in developing Oman’s space sector and enhancing international cooperation in space.

Harry O’Hanley, CEO of ABL, expressed his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing that the Gulf region’s space ecosystem is growing rapidly with new investments and ambitious exploration missions. He believes that local access to space is essential for these efforts and sees the partnership with Etlaq and Oman as an opportunity to provide this capability. His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais Al Said, CEO of Etlaq, also highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that it reflects their commitment to developing Oman’s space sector and positioning the spaceport as a global choice for established rocket companies.

This signing ceremony marks a significant step towards achieving Oman’s goals in developing the local space sector. It also underscores the country’s efforts to enhance international cooperation in the space industry. The Etlaq Spaceport is set to play a key role in strengthening Oman’s presence in the global space market and cementing its position as a leader in the region. With the support of ABL Space Systems and the partnership with Etlaq, Oman is poised to make significant strides in the space industry, fostering innovation, economic growth, and technological advancement in the Sultanate.

The collaboration between ABL Space Systems and Etlaq represents a significant opportunity for Oman to leverage its strategic location and resources to establish itself as a key player in the space industry. By partnering with ABL, the Sultanate will gain access to cutting-edge satellite launch capabilities and technologies, paving the way for a vibrant and competitive space sector. Through this partnership, Oman can capitalize on the growing demand for satellite launches in the region and attract more investment and partnerships in the space industry. The Etlaq Spaceport will not only serve as a launching pad for satellite missions but also as a hub for innovation, research, and collaboration in the field of space exploration.

The signing of the MoU between ABL Space Systems and Etlaq spaceport signifies a new era of cooperation and development in Oman’s space sector. This partnership will not only enhance Oman’s capabilities in satellite launch technology but also elevate its standing as a global player in the space industry. By investing in the development of the Etlaq Spaceport and fostering collaborations with international partners, Oman is taking significant steps towards realizing its vision of becoming a leader in space exploration and innovation. With the support of ABL Space Systems and the commitment of both governments, Oman is well-positioned to make significant advancements in the space industry and contribute to the global space economy.
