Doha, Qatar – Malta and Qatar are poised for continued growth in their bilateral relationship, with 2025 marking a year of significant milestones and deepening cooperation between the two nations. Celebrations of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, coupled with increased connectivity and high-level discussions, have laid the groundwork for expanded collaboration in tourism, trade, energy, and diplomacy. This strengthening Malta-Qatar relations is expected to yield further benefits for both countries in the coming year.

The year saw a renewed focus on strengthening ties, highlighted by a large-scale National Day reception hosted by the Embassy of Malta in Doha, attended by Qatari dignitaries, diplomats, and business leaders. This event underscored the shared values and collaborative spirit that define the relationship, according to the embassy.

Expanding Economic and Diplomatic Ties

A key development in 2025 was the resumption of direct flights by Qatar Airways to Malta, revitalizing travel and opening new avenues for tourism and investment. Visit Malta actively participated in the Qatar Travel Mart, showcasing the island nation’s attractions to a wider audience. Additionally, the second round of political consultations, held in August, demonstrated a mutual commitment to addressing regional and global challenges through dialogue, building on the first round held in Malta earlier in the year.

High-Level Meetings and Energy Cooperation

Further solidifying the partnership, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta, Dr. Ian Borg, visited Qatar in December. He met with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss expanding economic and commercial ties, boosting tourism, and fostering greater people-to-people contact.

Discussions also extended to the energy sector, with Dr. Borg meeting with Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy CEO, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi. The focus was on exploring opportunities for collaboration in sustainability and long-term energy security, areas of shared priority for both nations. Qatar is a major player in the global energy market, and Malta is increasingly focused on diversifying its energy sources.

Qatar’s Role on the Global Stage

Malta also commended Qatar’s successful hosting of several international events in 2025, including the Doha Forum and summits on social development and anti-corruption. These events reinforced Qatar’s position as a key hub for strategic dialogue and multilateral engagement. The Doha Forum, in particular, provided a platform for discussing global migration challenges, with Dr. Borg emphasizing the need for humane and coordinated solutions.

The Ambassador of Malta to Qatar, Simon Pullicino, highlighted Qatar’s commitment to peace, humanitarian support, and international cooperation. This alignment of values is a cornerstone of the growing bilateral relationship.

Looking Ahead: Continued Growth in Malta-Qatar Relations

As Qatar prepares to celebrate its National Day, Malta reaffirms its dedication to strengthening ties with the State of Qatar. The slogan for Qatar’s National Day, “With You It Rises, From You It Awaits,” reflects the strong bond between the leadership and the people of Qatar.

Looking ahead to 2026, both countries are expected to continue building bridges of friendship and shared prosperity. Future developments will likely focus on implementing agreements reached during recent high-level meetings and exploring new areas of cooperation, particularly in sustainable energy and tourism. The success of these initiatives will depend on ongoing political stability in the region and continued commitment from both governments to fostering a strong diplomatic partnership. Further details regarding specific projects and timelines are anticipated in the first quarter of 2026.

The Maltese Ministry for Foreign Affairs has not yet released a detailed roadmap for 2026, but officials indicate that continued dialogue and collaboration will be central to the agenda.
