Oman is experiencing a significant cold snap, with temperatures plummeting across the Sultanate over the past 24 hours. The latest data released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirms a sharp decline, bringing freezing conditions to the country’s higher elevations and noticeably cooler weather to desert and inland regions. This Oman weather update is crucial for residents and travelers alike, as precautions are advised to navigate the unusually cold temperatures.

Dramatic Temperature Drop Across Oman

The CAA’s meteorological data, published on Monday, January 26, 2026, paints a clear picture of the intensifying cold. Several areas have already recorded their lowest temperatures of the season, marking a substantial shift from the typically mild Omani winters. The cold is attributed to a large cold air mass influencing weather patterns throughout the region, and its effects are being felt from the mountains to the sands.

Record Lows in the Highlands

Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak, is currently the coldest location in the country, registering a frigid -4.0°C. This temperature is significantly lower than usual for this time of year and represents a potential hazard for anyone venturing into the mountains. Saiq, another high-altitude region, followed closely with a low of 6.2°C. These sub-zero temperatures highlight the severity of the current winter season in Oman.

The CAA emphasizes that these freezing conditions are confined to the higher altitudes. However, even these areas are seeing temperatures that require preparation and awareness. Hikers and campers are strongly advised to check the latest forecasts and pack appropriate warm clothing, including layers, hats, and gloves.

Cooler Temperatures in Desert and Inland Governorates

While the mountains bear the brunt of the cold, the impact is extending to Oman’s vast desert and inland governorates. Muqshin recorded a temperature of 12.1°C, and Haima experienced a low of 12.4°C. These readings, while not freezing, are considerably cooler than the average January temperatures in these areas.

Further inland, Ibra and Qairoon Hairitti saw temperatures of 13.2°C and 13.0°C respectively. Other locations, including Yaaloni, Bidiyah, Dhank, and Al Qabil, all remained within a narrow range of 13.4°C to 13.5°C. Marmul, rounding out the reported data, registered 13.6°C. This widespread cooling indicates a significant shift in the overall Oman climate.

These lower temperatures are impacting daily life, with residents opting for warmer clothing and seeking shelter during the cooler hours. Farmers are also taking steps to protect their crops from potential frost damage, demonstrating the broad reach of this cold snap.

Safety Advice and Ongoing Monitoring

The Civil Aviation Authority is actively monitoring the atmospheric changes and providing regular updates to the public. They are urging residents, particularly those in high-altitude and desert areas, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the cold. This includes dressing warmly, staying hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the elements, especially during the late-night and early-morning hours when temperatures are at their lowest.

Additionally, the CAA advises checking on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, to ensure they are adequately protected. Motorists traveling through mountainous regions should exercise extreme caution due to the potential for icy conditions. Staying informed about the latest weather forecast Oman is paramount during this period.

The current cold spell is a reminder of the diverse climatic conditions present within the Sultanate of Oman. While known for its warm desert climate, Oman also boasts high mountains that experience significantly colder temperatures, especially during the winter months. Understanding these regional variations is crucial for both residents and visitors.

Looking Ahead: Continued Cold and Importance of Preparedness

While the intensity of the cold may fluctuate in the coming days, the CAA anticipates that cooler-than-average temperatures will persist across much of Oman. This prolonged period of cold weather underscores the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness. Staying updated with the latest meteorological information from the CAA is the best way to ensure safety and comfort during this unusual weather event.

The recent data serves as a valuable resource for understanding the current Oman weather conditions and planning accordingly. By taking appropriate precautions and staying informed, residents and visitors can navigate this cold snap safely and enjoy the beauty of Oman, even in the winter chill.
