Oman’s Diplomatic Efforts Towards a Gaza Ceasefire

On Thursday, Sayyid Badr engaged in separate calls with Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League. These discussions centered heavily on the volatile situation in the Gaza Strip and the urgent need for a sustained Gaza ceasefire. The Sultanate of Oman has consistently advocated for de-escalation and a return to meaningful negotiations.

Reaffirming Support for Palestinian Rights

During his conversation with Dr. Shahin, the Foreign Minister reiterated Oman’s unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. Foremost among these rights is the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. This position is firmly rooted in international law, specifically referencing United Nations Security Council resolutions, including the most recent Resolution No. 2803. The Minister emphasized the importance of the Palestinian side’s full and effective participation in all efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace.

The call also served as a platform to discuss the various developments and current events directly impacting the Palestinian cause. Both ministers exchanged views on regional and international initiatives designed to stabilize the fragile Gaza ceasefire and prevent further escalation of violence. Oman believes a comprehensive approach, involving all relevant parties, is essential for a durable solution.

Strengthening Arab Coordination on Regional Security

The discussion with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, focused on the broader regional landscape and the escalating challenges to security and stability. Oman recognizes the pivotal role the Arab League plays in mediating conflicts and fostering cooperation among member states. The Foreign Minister underscored the significance Oman places on the League’s ability to contain tensions and promote pathways towards peaceful resolutions.

Both parties agreed on the necessity of intensified Arab-Arab consultation and coordination. This collaborative approach is seen as vital for safeguarding shared Arab security interests, protecting the well-being of the region’s populations, and ensuring overall regional stability. A unified Arab front is considered crucial in addressing the complex geopolitical issues facing the Middle East.

Addressing the Palestinian Issue within a Regional Context

The conversation with the Secretary-General also revisited the Palestinian cause, acknowledging its central importance to regional stability. Both leaders discussed ongoing Arab and international efforts to halt the escalation of violence and solidify the Gaza ceasefire. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting a viable political track that allows the Palestinian people to realize their legitimate rights, including self-determination, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions. This highlights the interconnectedness of the Palestinian issue with the wider regional security framework.

Oman’s foreign policy consistently prioritizes dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. The Sultanate’s neutral stance and established relationships with various actors in the region position it as a key mediator. This proactive diplomacy is aimed at preventing further deterioration of the security situation and creating an environment conducive to constructive negotiations. Regional stability is a core tenet of Omani foreign policy.

The Importance of a Political Solution

Throughout both conversations, a consistent theme emerged: the urgent need to move beyond temporary ceasefires and towards a comprehensive political solution. While a Gaza ceasefire is a critical first step, it is not a substitute for addressing the root causes of the conflict. Oman believes that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through genuine negotiations that take into account the legitimate aspirations of all parties involved.

The Sultanate continues to advocate for a two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state. This remains the internationally recognized framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Oman’s commitment to this framework is unwavering, and it actively encourages other regional and international actors to support it. Furthermore, Oman emphasizes the importance of international legitimacy in resolving the conflict.

Oman’s diplomatic initiatives demonstrate its dedication to fostering peace and security in the region. By actively engaging with key stakeholders and consistently advocating for a political solution, the Sultanate is playing a vital role in de-escalating tensions and promoting a more stable future for the Middle East. The ongoing efforts to secure a lasting Gaza ceasefire and address the underlying issues remain a top priority for Omani foreign policy.
