Doha, Qatar – Qatar Museums (QM) is currently hosting a compelling series of events focused on architecture and design, running through February 14, 2026. The program, titled “Architecture and Design – Turning Vision into a Universal Dialogue,” features lectures, workshops, and screenings at ALRIWAQ, coinciding with the ongoing I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture exhibition. This initiative aims to foster discussion and exploration of contemporary design principles and their impact on urban life.

The series brings together a diverse group of international architects, designers, and emerging talents to share insights and perspectives. Events are scheduled throughout January and February, offering opportunities for public engagement with leading figures in the field. Qatar Museums is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, with the program aligning with the broader “Evolution Nation” campaign recognizing Qatar’s cultural development.

Exploring Contemporary Architecture and Design in Qatar

The program’s core objective is to examine the evolving conversations shaping modern architecture and design. Lectures will cover a wide range of topics, from sustainable building practices to the intersection of design and business. Attendees can expect to gain new perspectives on how design influences daily life, work environments, and the overall experience of cities. The initiative reflects Qatar’s growing commitment to establishing itself as a global hub for art and culture, as spearheaded by Qatar Creates.

Featured Speakers and Events

Several prominent figures are scheduled to present during the series. On January 29, Dominique Jakob and Brendan MacFarlane will deliver a lecture on their design approach, focusing on the spatial and aesthetic outcomes of their landmark projects. Angus Campbell will follow on February 1 with a discussion on adaptive reuse and its role in achieving net-zero carbon targets. Retrofitting existing structures is increasingly recognized as a crucial component of sustainable urban development.

The program also includes immersive cinematic experiences. On February 5, audiences can view “The Infinite Happiness,” a film exploring the innovative “8 House” residential complex in Copenhagen. This documentary offers a human-centered perspective on contemporary living and the challenges of fostering community within architectural designs. Additionally, a series of film screenings on February 22 will showcase Qatari filmmakers and their work, including documentaries and animations focused on tradition and culture.

Further lectures will delve into specialized areas of design. Bas Smets will present on climatic landscape strategies on February 7, examining how landscape design can improve outdoor comfort and resilience. David Goodman will discuss the interplay between architectural practice, business, and organizational design on February 9, highlighting the economic forces that shape the built environment. These sessions aim to provide a holistic understanding of the complexities involved in bringing architectural visions to life.

The series will culminate in a student exhibition on February 14, 2026. This curated showcase will present work developed throughout the program, offering a glimpse into the ideas, processes, and dialogues that have unfolded. The exhibition will not only display final projects but also the experimental stages and collaborative discussions that informed them. This focus on process underscores the program’s commitment to fostering critical thinking and innovation in design thinking.

The ongoing “Evolution Nation” campaign, celebrating Qatar’s cultural journey over the past 50 years, provides a broader context for this initiative. This national movement, curated by Qatar Creates, aims to position Qatar as a leading center for art, culture, and creativity. The program’s emphasis on urban planning and sustainable design aligns with Qatar’s long-term vision for a vibrant and resilient future.

Looking ahead, the student exhibition on February 14th will mark the conclusion of this iteration of the “Architecture and Design” series. Qatar Museums has not yet announced plans for future installments, but the success of this program suggests a continued commitment to supporting and promoting dialogue within the architectural and design communities. Further developments regarding Qatar’s cultural initiatives and the “Evolution Nation” campaign will be closely watched as the country continues to invest in its cultural landscape.
