The 15th edition of the Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) is currently hosting the Open Fire Food Festival, a unique culinary experience curated by Steve Harvey. The event, which began on January 15th and continues through January 16th at Stadium 974 in Doha, showcases the art of open-flame cooking and aims to foster cultural understanding through a shared love of food. This year’s festival is expected to draw large crowds, continuing QIFF’s tradition as a major culinary destination in the region.

QIFF 2026, running until January 24th, features a diverse range of food vendors and entertainment, but the Open Fire Food Festival has quickly become a focal point. The festival opened with a panel discussion featuring Harvey and prominent chefs specializing in grilling, including Melissa Cookston, Moe Cason, and Bob Trudnak. The discussion highlighted the universal appeal of food and the importance of finding common ground between cultures.

Open Fire Food Festival Highlights the Art of Grilling

Harvey emphasized his belief that food can transcend cultural and religious boundaries, fostering connection and understanding. He stated the festival is an attempt to focus on shared experiences rather than differences, using the communal act of cooking and eating as a bridge. This sentiment resonated with attendees and the participating chefs.

Chef Melissa Cookston spoke about the primal attraction to fire, noting that people are naturally captivated by it. She explained that the process of mastering open-flame cooking is both challenging and rewarding, contributing to a sense of personal accomplishment. Cookston, a renowned barbecue expert, is demonstrating techniques throughout the two-day event.

The chefs are not only showcasing their skills but also expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to share their culinary traditions with a Qatari audience. Chef Bob Trudnak, originally from Pennsylvania, described bringing his American-style barbecue to Qatar as a significant honor. He hopes to introduce new flavors and techniques to local food enthusiasts.

Cultural Exchange and Culinary Innovation

Meanwhile, Chef Moe Cason expressed his eagerness to learn from the local culinary scene and incorporate new influences into his own barbecue style. He highlighted the adaptability required in outdoor cooking, noting the need to adjust techniques based on weather conditions and available resources. Cason’s journey as a self-taught chef underscores the power of passion and perseverance in the culinary arts.

The Open Fire Food Festival is contributing to the broader appeal of QIFF, which has grown into a major event for both local residents and international visitors. The festival’s inclusion of live cooking demonstrations and interactive experiences is enhancing the overall visitor engagement. Additionally, a spectacular fireworks and drone show accompanied the festival’s opening, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

All three visiting chefs expressed a strong desire to return to Qatar for future culinary events. They praised the hospitality of the Qatari people and the country’s growing interest in diverse food cultures. Their positive experiences are likely to encourage further collaboration and exchange between Qatari and international chefs.

The Qatar International Food Festival continues through January 24th, offering a wide array of culinary delights and entertainment options. Organizers will likely assess the success of the Open Fire Food Festival based on attendance numbers and visitor feedback. Future iterations of QIFF may feature similar specialized events, further diversifying the festival’s offerings and attracting a wider audience.
