The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) expressed strong support for ongoing efforts to stabilize the country following a productive meeting with Saudi Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman in Riyadh on Thursday. Discussions centered on the recent handover of military camps and the path toward restoring Yemen’s state institutions, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to a unified and secure future. The meeting underscores Saudi Arabia’s continued pivotal role in the region and its dedication to supporting a political resolution to the conflict.

The PLC conveyed its gratitude to Saudi Arabia, led by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for their consistent support of the Yemeni people. This support includes humanitarian aid, economic assistance, and crucial backing for the internationally recognized government as it works to reassert control and address the country’s multifaceted challenges. The discussions also touched upon the ongoing threat posed by the Houthi movement.

Strengthening Security and Governance in Yemen

A key focus of the meeting was the successful completion of military camp handovers in Hadramaut, Al-Mahrah, Aden, and other liberated governorates. According to the PLC, this transfer represents a significant step towards consolidating state authority and establishing a unified security apparatus. The formation of a Supreme Military Committee, operating under the Coalition to Support Legitimacy, is intended to oversee the integration of forces based on national and professional standards.

Addressing the Houthi Threat

The PLC emphasized the need for a strong and cohesive military to counter the Houthi movement, which is reportedly backed by Iran. The unification of forces is seen as vital for enhancing readiness and ensuring the state has sole authority over decisions related to war and peace. This centralization of command aims to prevent fragmentation and improve coordination in confronting security threats.

The Council also acknowledged the dedication of Yemen’s armed forces and security personnel in maintaining order and protecting civilians. Their professionalism during the handover process was specifically commended. This positive development comes after years of conflict that have severely strained Yemen’s security infrastructure.

The Southern Issue and National Dialogue

The complex issue of Southern Yemen was also addressed during the meeting. The PLC reiterated its commitment to a just and equitable resolution through a comprehensive South-South dialogue, scheduled to be held in Riyadh under Saudi auspices. This dialogue aims to ensure broad representation and address the legitimate concerns of the Southern population.

The goal is to restore decision-making power to its rightful owners within the framework of a unified Yemeni state, respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. This process is considered crucial for achieving lasting peace and stability, and for preventing further divisions within the country. The dialogue is expected to be a lengthy and delicate process, requiring compromise from all parties involved.

International Support and Humanitarian Concerns

The Presidential Leadership Council welcomed the unified international stance in support of Yemen’s unity and territorial integrity. This international consensus rejects any unilateral actions that could undermine state institutions or destabilize the region. The regaining of initiative by the government is viewed as an opportunity to advance the peace process and improve the dire humanitarian situation.

The meeting also reviewed urgent humanitarian and service needs, particularly in the Socotra Archipelago Governorate. The PLC stressed the importance of expediting the normalization of conditions in liberated areas, including the return of government institutions and the provision of essential services. Addressing the needs of victims, treating the wounded, and strengthening the rule of law are also priorities.

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains one of the world’s worst, with millions facing starvation and disease. The conflict has severely disrupted access to food, water, and healthcare, creating a desperate situation for the civilian population. International aid organizations continue to work tirelessly to provide assistance, but access remains a significant challenge.

Next Steps and Ongoing Challenges

The PLC adopted decisions to address administrative gaps and improve service delivery, aiming to meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people. These measures are intended to lay the groundwork for a new phase of partnership and justice, ultimately leading to the restoration of fully functioning state institutions and the defeat of the Houthi coup. The situation in Yemen remains fluid, and the success of these efforts depends on continued cooperation between the PLC, Saudi Arabia, and the international community.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on the preparations for the South-South dialogue in Riyadh. The timing and scope of this dialogue are still uncertain, but it is expected to be a critical step in addressing the long-standing grievances of the Southern population. Additionally, continued efforts to unify the military and security forces will be essential for maintaining stability and countering the Houthi threat. The international community will be closely watching these developments, hoping for a sustained path towards peace and a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Yemen and the broader regional political stability.
