Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom secured a victory in the car category of the 11th stage of the 2024 Dakar Rally on Thursday, while American Skyler Howes achieved his first stage win in the motorcycle division. The stage, held in Saudi Arabia, saw Ekstrom complete the course in 2 hours, 47 minutes, and 22 seconds. This latest result shifts the focus to the overall standings as the grueling race nears its conclusion.

The 11th stage unfolded near Al Ula, presenting competitors with a challenging mix of terrain. Ekstrom, driving a Ford Raptor, demonstrated strong performance, while Howes’ win marks a significant milestone in his Dakar Rally career. The event continues to test the endurance of both drivers and machines as they navigate the demanding Saudi Arabian landscape.

Ekstrom and Howes Triumph in Stage 11 of the Dakar Rally

Ekstrom’s victory is the eighth special stage win of his Dakar Rally career and his third in this year’s competition. He has consistently been a strong contender, showcasing his skill in navigating the complex desert routes. However, despite the stage win, he remains fourth in the overall car standings.

Meanwhile, Howes’ maiden motorcycle stage win is a notable achievement in a category dominated by experienced riders. The American rider’s performance suggests a growing confidence and ability to compete at the highest level of off-road racing. This win could provide momentum for a stronger finish in the remaining stages.

Current Overall Standings

Qatar’s Nasser al-Attiyah continues to lead the car division with an 8-minute and 40-second advantage over Spain’s Nani Roma. Frenchman Sebastien Loeb holds third position, putting pressure on Roma for the second spot. According to reports, al-Attiyah is focused on maintaining his lead rather than aggressively pursuing further stage wins.

Al-Attiyah, a five-time Dakar Rally champion, stated he allowed Loeb to pass during the stage to maintain a consistent pace and conserve his vehicle. He emphasized the importance of finishing the race in first place, even if it means conceding a few minutes in the final stages. This strategic approach highlights the long-term planning involved in the rally.

The motorcycle category remains highly competitive, with several riders vying for the top position. While Howes secured a stage win, the overall leader remains to be determined. The race has seen numerous lead changes, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of the off-road racing event.

The Dakar Rally, originally held in Africa, moved to Saudi Arabia in 2020. This relocation has brought new challenges and opportunities for competitors, including navigating vast sand dunes and rocky canyons. The event has become a major sporting fixture in Saudi Arabia, attracting international attention and boosting tourism.

The remaining two stages will be crucial in solidifying the overall standings. Competitors will need to balance speed with caution to avoid mechanical failures or navigational errors. The final stages are expected to be particularly demanding, testing the limits of both human and machine.

Weather conditions and the evolving terrain will continue to play a significant role in the outcome of the rally. The organizers are closely monitoring the situation and may adjust the course if necessary to ensure the safety of the participants. The final results will depend on a combination of skill, strategy, and a bit of luck.

The 2024 Dakar Rally is scheduled to conclude on January 19th. Observers will be watching closely to see if al-Attiyah can maintain his lead and secure his sixth championship title, and how the motorcycle competition unfolds in the final push to the finish line. Any significant mechanical issues or navigational mistakes in the remaining stages could dramatically alter the final results.
