Doha, Qatar – In a significant leadership change for Qatar’s quality control infrastructure, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of Qatar, has appointed Eng. Nawaf Ibrahim Al Hamad Al Mana as the new Chairman of the Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QGOSM). The Amiri Decision, number 6 of 2026, was issued on Sunday and is immediately effective, as outlined in the official announcement. This appointment signals a continued focus on maintaining and elevating the nation’s standards in a rapidly developing economy.

The decision comes at a pivotal time as Qatar continues to diversify its economy and prepare for future international events. Eng. Al Mana’s appointment was published in the official gazette, formalizing the change in leadership for the crucial regulatory body. The QGOSM plays a vital role in ensuring the quality, safety, and conformity of products and services available in the Qatari market.

The Role of the Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology

The QGOSM is the primary authority responsible for developing and implementing national standards across a wide range of industries, including construction, food safety, and industrial manufacturing. These standards are designed to protect consumers, promote fair trade, and support the country’s economic growth. The organization also oversees metrology, ensuring the accuracy of measurements used in commerce and science.

Importance of Standardization in Qatar

Standardization is particularly important for Qatar given its substantial infrastructure projects and increasing imports. Maintaining high standards ensures the longevity and safety of these projects, as well as the quality of goods consumed by the population. The QGOSM works closely with international standardization bodies to adopt best practices and facilitate global trade.

Eng. Al Mana brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously held key engineering roles within Qatar’s public sector. While details of his specific prior positions within the standards and metrology field haven’t been widely released, his engineering background suggests a strong understanding of technical requirements and quality assurance processes. This expertise will be crucial as the QGOSM navigates increasingly complex regulatory landscapes.

The timing of this leadership change also coincides with ongoing preparations for various national initiatives aimed at bolstering economic diversification and attracting foreign investment. According to reports from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Qatar is actively working to streamline its regulatory processes and enhance its competitiveness. The new Chairman will likely be instrumental in implementing these reforms within the QGOSM.

Furthermore, the appointment is viewed by some analysts as a move to strengthen Qatar’s position as a regional hub for quality control and certification. The country has been increasingly focused on attracting international organizations and establishing itself as a leader in areas like halal certification and sustainable building practices. This focus on quality assurance is expected to continue under Eng. Al Mana’s leadership.

However, the QGOSM has faced challenges in the past, including concerns about the enforcement of standards and the need for greater coordination between different government agencies. Addressing these issues will be a key priority for the new Chairman. Strengthening regulatory compliance and improving communication with stakeholders are expected to be central to his strategy.

The Qatari government has been steadily investing in the infrastructure and resources of the QGOSM in recent years. This includes upgrading testing laboratories and expanding the organization’s capacity to develop new standards. The appointment of Eng. Al Mana is seen as a continuation of this commitment to strengthening the nation’s technical regulations.

Looking ahead, the QGOSM is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aims to transform the country into a knowledge-based economy. The organization will need to adapt to emerging technologies and develop standards that promote innovation and sustainability. The next steps will involve a formal handover of responsibilities and the announcement of the new Chairman’s strategic priorities for the organization. It remains to be seen how Eng. Al Mana will approach these challenges and opportunities, but his appointment signals a clear commitment to maintaining and enhancing Qatar’s standards and metrology infrastructure.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is expected to release further details regarding the transition plan in the coming weeks. Stakeholders will be closely watching for announcements regarding potential changes to existing standards and the implementation of new regulatory initiatives.
