Doha, Qatar – The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced a temporary road closure in Doha affecting traffic flow between Jasim Bin Hamad Street and Fahad Bin Jassim Al Thani Street. The closure, scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday, January 12, 2026, and continue until Tuesday, January 20, 2026, is necessary for critical maintenance work on the area’s drainage network. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during the specified hours.

The affected area centers on the intersection of Jasim Bin Hamad and Fahad Bin Jassim Al Thani Streets, a busy thoroughfare in Doha. The closure will specifically impact the free right and service road connecting the two streets, requiring drivers to find detours. Ashghal has indicated that the work is essential to ensure the continued functionality of the city’s infrastructure.

Understanding the Doha Road Closure and Diversion Plans

Ashghal routinely undertakes infrastructure maintenance projects throughout Doha to improve the city’s services and accommodate its growing population. These projects, while sometimes disruptive, are vital for long-term sustainability and efficiency. The current road closure is focused on the drainage network, a system crucial for managing rainwater and preventing flooding, particularly during the wetter winter months.

The maintenance will occur between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM daily during the nine-day period. This timing is intended to minimize disruption to peak traffic hours, although some delays are still anticipated. Ashghal is urging all road users to observe posted speed limits and exercise caution when navigating the diversion routes.

Available Diversion Routes

Motorists affected by the closure will be directed to utilize nearby streets and alternative roadways. Ashghal has not released a detailed map of the diversion, but advises drivers to follow signage posted in the area. It is expected that traffic will be rerouted through surrounding residential and commercial zones, potentially increasing congestion on those streets.

Traffic management personnel will be present to assist drivers and ensure a smooth flow of vehicles. Drivers are encouraged to utilize navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze for real-time traffic updates and optimal route planning. These apps often incorporate traffic updates and can suggest alternative paths to avoid delays.

Qatar has experienced significant infrastructure development in recent years, particularly in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This development has led to a complex network of roads and highways, and ongoing maintenance is essential to keep the system operating effectively. Similar roadworks have been implemented across Doha in the past, often with minimal long-term impact.

However, the timing of this closure, in early January, coincides with a period when many residents are returning from the holiday season. This could potentially exacerbate traffic congestion in the affected areas. Additionally, the closure may impact public transportation routes, and commuters are advised to check with Mowasalat for any service adjustments.

The maintenance of the drainage network is a proactive measure to prevent potential issues during periods of heavy rainfall. A well-maintained system is critical for public safety and minimizing disruptions to daily life. Neglecting this critical infrastructure could lead to more extensive and costly repairs in the future.

Looking ahead, the successful completion of this maintenance project is expected by January 20, 2026. Ashghal will likely monitor the situation closely for any unforeseen delays or complications. Residents and commuters should continue to monitor Doha traffic news sources for further updates and advisories as the project progresses and potential road reopenings are announced.

It remains to be seen if additional closures will be necessary in the coming months as Ashghal continues its infrastructure maintenance program throughout the city.
