A significant cold wave is forecast to sweep across northern and central Saudi Arabia starting Saturday and lasting through Tuesday, bringing freezing temperatures to several regions. The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) issued the warning, anticipating minimum temperatures between 2°C and -2°C in affected areas. Residents in these provinces should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions due to the sharp temperature decline and possible frost.

The anticipated cold snap will primarily impact the regions of Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Tabuk, Hail, Qassim, Riyadh, and the northern parts of the Eastern Province, according to the NCM. This weather event follows a period of relatively mild temperatures across much of the Kingdom, making the sudden shift more impactful. Authorities are urging caution, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Understanding the Current Cold Wave Forecast

The NCM’s forecast indicates a strengthening of high-pressure systems over the region, drawing in colder air masses from the north. This is a typical weather pattern for Saudi Arabia during the winter months, though the intensity of this particular system appears to be more pronounced. The duration of the cold wave, spanning four days, also suggests a prolonged period of frigid conditions.

Regional Temperature Expectations

While the overall forecast points to widespread cooling, specific temperature variations are expected across the affected regions. The mountainous areas of Tabuk and Al-Jouf are likely to experience the lowest temperatures, potentially dropping below freezing during nighttime hours. Riyadh, while further south, is still expected to see a substantial decrease, with temperatures possibly reaching near-freezing levels.

The Eastern Province, particularly its northern sections, will experience a noticeable chill, but temperatures are not predicted to be as extreme as in the more northerly regions. This difference is attributed to the moderating influence of the Persian Gulf. However, residents should still anticipate colder-than-usual conditions.

The impact of this cold wave extends beyond simply low temperatures. The NCM also suggests the possibility of frost formation in some areas, which could affect agriculture and infrastructure. Additionally, increased wind speeds associated with the high-pressure system may exacerbate the feeling of cold and create hazardous driving conditions.

Saudi Arabia’s climate is characterized by extreme variations, with scorching summers and relatively mild winters. However, temperatures can still drop significantly, especially in the northern and mountainous regions. The country has been investing in improved weather forecasting and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of such events.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has not yet issued specific guidance regarding crop protection, but it is likely monitoring the situation closely. Farmers in the affected areas are advised to take precautionary measures, such as covering sensitive plants, to minimize potential damage from frost. The potential for winter weather to disrupt agricultural activities is a key concern.

Transportation authorities are also preparing for the possibility of icy roads, particularly in elevated areas. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and be aware of potential black ice formation. The General Directorate of Traffic is expected to increase patrols in affected regions to assist motorists and respond to any incidents.

In contrast to the northern and central regions, the southern parts of Saudi Arabia, including Jazan and Asir, are expected to maintain relatively warmer temperatures. These areas typically experience milder winters due to their proximity to the Red Sea and lower altitudes. This regional difference highlights the diverse climatic zones within the Kingdom.

The current weather forecast builds on previous observations of increased atmospheric instability across the Middle East. Experts have noted a trend towards more frequent and intense weather events in the region, potentially linked to broader climate change patterns. While attributing any single event to climate change is complex, the overall trend is a cause for concern.

The NCM emphasizes the importance of staying informed about the latest weather updates and following the guidance of local authorities. Residents are encouraged to check the NCM’s website and social media channels for real-time information and advisories. Preparing for cold temperatures, including appropriate clothing and heating, is crucial for ensuring safety and well-being.

Looking ahead, the NCM will continue to monitor the progression of the cold snap and provide updated forecasts as needed. The intensity and duration of the cold wave remain subject to change based on evolving atmospheric conditions. Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for potential further cooling in the coming days. The situation will be reassessed on Tuesday to determine the extent of the impact and any potential follow-up measures.

The potential impact on daily life, including school schedules and outdoor activities, will likely be determined by local municipalities based on the severity of the conditions. It is advisable to check with local schools and event organizers for any changes or cancellations. The overall goal is to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of the public during this period of cold temperatures.
