Cairo – Saudi Arabian physician and researcher Ahmed bin Salem Bahammam has been recognized as Arab Doctor of the Year 2025 by the Council of Arab Health Ministers. The prestigious award, specifically in the Scientific Research and Innovation category, acknowledges Dr. Bahammam’s significant contributions to the field of sleep medicine and its advancement within the Arab world. The announcement was made December 18th at the League of Arab States.

Dr. Bahammam, a professor at King Saud University, was selected following recommendations from advisory and award committees and formalized under Council Resolution No. (3). His work focuses on both sleep medicine and pulmonary diseases, reflecting a broad expertise in respiratory health. This recognition highlights the growing importance of specialized medical fields like sleep science across the region.

The Rise of Sleep Medicine and Dr. Bahammam’s Pioneering Work

The field of sleep medicine has gained increasing attention globally in recent decades, as understanding of the link between sleep and overall health has deepened. Conditions like sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are now recognized as having significant impacts on cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, and daily functioning. Dr. Bahammam’s work has been instrumental in bringing this awareness to the forefront in Saudi Arabia and beyond.

He established Saudi Arabia’s first academic sleep medicine research center in 2002, a pivotal moment in the development of the specialty within the country. This center has since become a leading hub for research, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep disorders. Prior to this, access to specialized sleep care was limited, requiring patients to seek treatment abroad.

Extensive Research and Publications

Dr. Bahammam’s impact extends far beyond the establishment of the research center. He has authored or co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributing significantly to the body of knowledge surrounding sleep and respiratory health. This prolific output demonstrates a sustained commitment to rigorous scientific inquiry.

Additionally, he is the author of approximately 10 specialized medical books, further solidifying his position as a thought leader in the field. These publications serve as valuable resources for medical professionals and students alike, promoting best practices in diagnosis and treatment. The focus on accessible knowledge is a key component of improving patient care.

International Recognition and Leadership

The Council of Arab Health Ministers’ award is not Dr. Bahammam’s first instance of international acclaim. Earlier in 2024, ScholarGPS ranked him sixth globally among leading sleep medicine scientists based on their research output over the preceding five years. This ranking underscores the international relevance and impact of his work.

Currently, Dr. Bahammam serves as president of the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine, a role that allows him to shape the direction of sleep medicine research and clinical practice across Asia. He also holds editorial positions in several prominent international medical journals, giving him influence over the dissemination of scientific findings. This involvement in key organizations demonstrates his commitment to advancing the field on a global scale.

The recognition from the Council of Arab Health Ministers comes as healthcare systems across the Arab world are increasingly focused on preventative medicine and addressing chronic diseases. Sleep disorders often contribute to or exacerbate other health conditions, making their effective management a crucial component of overall public health. This shift in focus is driving demand for specialized expertise in areas like pulmonary health and sleep science.

The award process involved a thorough review of nominations by expert committees, considering factors such as research impact, clinical innovation, and contributions to medical education. The Council of Arab Health Ministers aims to promote excellence in healthcare throughout the region through initiatives like this annual award. The selection criteria emphasize tangible contributions to improving patient outcomes.

While the specific details of the award ceremony and any accompanying events have not been widely publicized, the Council’s announcement signals a formal presentation will likely occur in the coming months. The timing of the ceremony will depend on scheduling considerations within the League of Arab States and the availability of Dr. Bahammam. Further details regarding the presentation are expected to be released by the Council in early 2025.

Looking ahead, Dr. Bahammam’s continued leadership in the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine and his ongoing research at King Saud University are expected to further advance the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders. The long-term impact of his work on respiratory medicine and public health in the region remains to be seen, but the initial indicators are highly promising. The Council of Arab Health Ministers will likely continue to monitor and support advancements in this critical area of healthcare.

The growing field of chronic disease management will also benefit from the increased awareness and research surrounding sleep disorders, potentially leading to more integrated and effective healthcare strategies.
