Doha, Qatar – The recent ISF World Schools Volleyball Championship in Shangluo, China, provided a significant international learning experience for students from Qatar Foundation (QF) schools. Two under-15 teams, representing both boys and girls, competed against peers from 18 nations, fostering teamwork, discipline, and personal development beyond the athletic arena. The event underscored QF’s commitment to holistic education, integrating sports with academic pursuits.

The championship, which concluded earlier this month, marked the first time QF schools have participated in a volleyball tournament of this scale. The competition took place from December 21st to 27th, bringing together young athletes from across the globe. Qatar Foundation views participation in such events as crucial for developing well-rounded individuals prepared for leadership roles.

Qatar Foundation Schools Compete in International Volleyball Championship

The participation of Qatar Academy Doha (QAD) and Qatar Academy Al Wakra (QAW) teams aligns with QF’s broader strategy to promote youth development through sports. This approach aims to cultivate not only athletic skill but also essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and resilience. According to QF officials, the experience is designed to broaden students’ perspectives and prepare them for a globalized world.

Building Teamwork and Confidence

Lina Al Khater, captain of the QAD girls’ volleyball team, emphasized the sense of pride and responsibility that came with representing Qatar on an international stage. She noted the championship significantly improved her team’s communication and collaborative abilities. Al Khater also expressed her motivation to continue developing her skills and potentially represent Qatar at higher levels in the future.

Meanwhile, Laila Hussain Zada, also a student at QAD, highlighted the supportive environment within the team. She stated that the mutual encouragement and collaborative spirit were key to their growth and improvement throughout the competition. This emphasis on team dynamics reflects a core tenet of QF’s educational philosophy.

Gaining Competitive Experience

Khalifa Mohammed Al Darwish, captain of the QAW boys’ volleyball team, described the championship as a valuable learning opportunity. He explained that each match provided insights into different playing styles and strategies, enhancing their overall performance and adaptability. The experience of competing against more seasoned international teams presented a significant, yet beneficial, challenge.

Additionally, the event provided exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering cross-cultural understanding among the student athletes. This aspect of the championship is considered particularly important in promoting global citizenship, a key objective of Qatar’s national vision. The experience of navigating a new environment and interacting with peers from different backgrounds contributed to the students’ personal growth.

The Qatari teams faced stiff competition throughout the tournament, gaining valuable experience against established sports programs. While specific match results were not widely publicized, the focus remained on the developmental benefits of participation. The event also served as a platform to showcase the growing commitment to youth athletics within Qatar.

Looking ahead, Qatar Foundation is expected to evaluate the outcomes of this initial participation and consider expanding its involvement in future ISF World Schools Championships. The feasibility of hosting similar international events in Qatar is also under discussion, potentially further promoting youth sports development and international collaboration. Further details regarding QF’s long-term strategy in this area are anticipated in the coming months.

Qatar Foundation continues to prioritize holistic education, and the success of this volleyball initiative suggests a continued emphasis on integrating sports into the curriculum.
