Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) completed a historic year by winning the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Doha, Qatar, on December 19, 2025, defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout. The victory secured the club’s sixth trophy of the calendar year, marking an unprecedented period of success. The match, held at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, ended 1-1 after extra time, with PSG ultimately prevailing 2-1 in the penalties.

The dramatic win follows PSG’s earlier successes in 2025, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions. This accomplishment solidifies PSG’s position as a dominant force in European and global football. The Intercontinental Cup represents a showdown between the champions of UEFA’s Champions League and CONMEBOL’s Copa Libertadores.

PSG’s Historic Trophy Haul in 2025

The Intercontinental Cup final saw a tightly contested match. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG late in the first half, but Flamengo equalized through Jorginho’s penalty kick after the break. Despite both teams’ efforts, no further goals were scored during extra time, leading to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov proved to be the decisive factor, saving four penalties and earning widespread praise for his performance. This individual brilliance combined with a resilient team display ultimately secured the victory for the Parisian club. Coach Luis Enrique emphasized the team’s consistent mentality throughout the year.

A Season of Dominance

This remarkable season for PSG follows significant investment in the squad, with high-profile signings aimed at achieving success in both domestic and international competitions. The club’s ambition has always been to establish itself as one of the world’s elite, and this 2025 run of form demonstrably proves their rise. The change in strategy has clearly paid dividends.

According to reports following the match, the victory also highlights the growing relationship between PSG and its supporters, both in Paris and internationally. The presence of travelling fans in Doha was noted by both Enrique and midfielder Vitinha as a significant source of motivation.

Midfielder Vitinha acknowledged the difficulty of the match, praising Flamengo’s resilience and attributing PSG’s win to hard work, a degree of luck, and Safonov’s exceptional goalkeeping. His comments reflect a broader sense of relief and celebration within the PSG camp.

Enrique also underscored the importance of the blend between experienced players and emerging talents within the PSG squad. He noted that a balanced roster has been key to navigating a demanding football schedule and maintaining a high level of performance. This team composition is crucial for sustained success, analysts say.

Despite the celebrations, Enrique pointed to upcoming commitments, including a Coupe de France match before a planned break over Christmas. Maintaining focus will be paramount as PSG aims to continue its winning momentum into 2026.

Looking ahead, PSG’s success sets a high bar for the future and raises expectations for continued dominance in both Ligue 1 and European competitions. The club will likely focus on retaining key players and potentially adding further reinforcements to the squad during the January transfer window to strengthen their position. The next key date is the Coupe de France match, with the outcome determining their competitive schedule in early 2026.
