Doha, Qatar – Jordan advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Iraq at the Education City Stadium on Thursday. A penalty converted by Ali Olwan in the 41st minute proved to be the decisive goal, securing Jordan’s place in a highly anticipated clash against Saudi Arabia. The win demonstrates Jordan’s growing strength in regional football and continues their impressive form as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match, played before a crowd of 43,486 spectators, saw Jordan overcome an early injury to key player Yazan Al Naimat and withstand a determined second-half push from Iraq. This victory marks a significant milestone for Jordanian football, showcasing their tactical maturity and resilience on the international stage.

Jordan Secures Semi-Final Spot in FIFA Arab Cup 2025

The game began at a frantic pace, with Jordan nearly taking the lead within the first minute. Yazan Al Naimat’s attempted back-heel from a corner was brilliantly saved by Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil. However, Jordan’s early momentum was disrupted when Al Naimat suffered a knee injury, forcing a substitution in the 15th minute.

Despite the setback, Jordan continued to press forward. The breakthrough came just before halftime when a VAR review confirmed a handball by Iraq’s Mustafa Saadoo inside the penalty area. Ali Olwan stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty home, giving Jordan a 1-0 lead.

Iraq’s Second-Half Efforts

Following the restart, Iraq, under the guidance of coach Graham Arnold, increased their attacking intensity. They created several opportunities, with Ahmed Maknazi heading narrowly wide and Ali Jasim testing Jordan’s goalkeeper, Yazeed Abulaila, on multiple occasions.

Despite 18 total shot attempts, including five on target, Iraq were unable to find an equalizer. Jordan’s defense remained resolute, effectively clearing dangerous balls and frustrating Iraq’s attacking efforts. The Iraqi team struggled to convert possession into meaningful scoring chances, ultimately succumbing to Jordan’s disciplined defensive structure.

The match wasn’t without its emotional toll for Jordan. Coach Jamal Sellami expressed concern over the severity of Yazan Al Naimat’s injury, stating it significantly impacted the team’s morale. Goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila echoed this sentiment, dedicating the win to his injured captain. The Peninsula Qatar reported on the team’s dedication to Al Naimat.

This win for Jordan comes as they continue to build momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have already qualified. Their performance in the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign has been impressive, and their success in the Arab Cup further solidifies their position as a rising force in Asian football. The tournament also provides valuable competitive experience for players preparing for the larger stage.

Jordan will now face Saudi Arabia in the semi-finals at Al Bayt Stadium on Monday. The Green Falcons defeated Palestine 2-1 in their quarter-final match. The outcome of this match will determine which team advances to the title clash. The tournament continues to showcase the growing talent within the Arab region, and the semi-final matches promise to be highly competitive.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on the recovery of Yazan Al Naimat and assessing the extent of his injury. The team’s medical staff will provide updates in the coming days. The semi-final against Saudi Arabia will be a significant test for Jordan, and their ability to maintain their defensive solidity and capitalize on scoring opportunities will be crucial. The final result remains uncertain, but Jordan’s recent form suggests they are well-equipped to challenge for the title.
