Doha, Qatar – The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), in collaboration with World Athletics and the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has launched “Aim Beyond,” a global initiative to construct 11 state-of-the-art running tracks in underserved communities. This project, announced during a ceremony in Doha, aims to leverage the power of sport development to empower youth and foster sustainable progress internationally. The initiative builds upon Qatar’s hosting of the 2019 World Athletics Championships and seeks to extend its positive impact far beyond national borders.
The announcement follows a signed agreement between QOC Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain and QFFD Director General Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti on December 6, 2023, during the Doha Forum focused on diplomacy, dialogue, and diversity. World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon also attended the signing event, signaling the strong partnership driving the project forward.
Expanding Access Through Sport Development
The “Aim Beyond” project will see the construction of ecologically sound and inclusive running tracks in Palestine, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, the Cook Islands, Panama, Anguilla, Dominica, Burundi, Tanzania, and Ukraine. These tracks will be designed to accommodate athletes of all abilities, reflecting a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity within athletics. According to the QOC, the tracks will serve as more than just training facilities; they are intended to be community hubs fostering social cohesion and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Qatar has increasingly focused on using its sporting infrastructure and events as a platform for broader development goals. This initiative underscores a national strategy to transform a sporting legacy into a tangible force for positive global change. The QFFD, a key partner, has a long history of supporting projects that promote human development and economic stability in numerous countries.
Project Features and Sustainability
A defining characteristic of the “Aim Beyond” tracks is their commitment to sustainability. Construction will prioritize eco-friendly materials and practices to minimize environmental impact. This aligns with growing international efforts to make major sporting events and related infrastructure more environmentally responsible.
The project also places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, ensuring that athletes with disabilities have equal access to training and competition opportunities. This commitment represents a significant step towards promoting para-athletics and fostering a more inclusive sporting landscape.
H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain emphasized that “Aim Beyond” seeks to provide opportunities for aspiring athletes to reach their full potential, similar to how the Doha 2019 World Championships allowed Qatar to excel. Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti of the QFFD stated that the project aims to establish pathways for youth to develop their talents and build brighter futures through the transformative power of sport.
World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon highlighted the essential role of partnerships in expanding access to athletics worldwide. He expressed gratitude to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani for his vision and commitment, acknowledging the significant contribution to the future of the sport. He noted the need for greater access to facilities, which “Aim Beyond” directly addresses.
The project reflects a growing recognition of the social and economic benefits associated with investment in youth sports. Beyond the direct health and well-being impacts, access to quality sporting facilities can contribute to personal development, education, and overall community empowerment.
Construction timelines for the tracks haven’t been definitively announced, though initial phases are expected to begin in early 2024. Challenges related to logistics, local regulations, and potential geopolitical instability in some of the recipient countries could affect the project’s pace. Observers will be watching for updates on the specific construction plans and the degree to which the project successfully integrates into existing community structures.
