Qatar Airways has resumed daily, non-stop service to Canberra, Australia, as of December 2, 2025, connecting the capital city to over 170 destinations worldwide via its hub in Doha. The return of the route, operated with a Boeing 777, expands the airline’s Australian network to six key cities and offers increased travel options for residents of the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding regions. This development is expected to boost tourism and business travel to and from Canberra.

The service operates via Melbourne, providing seamless connections for passengers. Qatar Airways now serves Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Canberra, solidifying its presence in the Australian market. The airline’s return follows a period of suspension and aims to meet growing demand for international travel to and from Australia’s capital.

Qatar Airways Canberra Route Resumption: A Boost for Australian Travel

The resumption of the Qatar Airways route to Canberra is anticipated to significantly impact the region’s connectivity. According to Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron, the service restores a vital link for over a million people in the ACT and southern New South Wales. This increased accessibility is expected to benefit both leisure and business travelers.

Passengers traveling on the route will have access to several premium amenities. These include complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi – a feature Qatar Airways is the first to offer to and from Canberra – and the airline’s highly-regarded in-flight service. The Boeing 777 will also feature Qsuite Business Class, offering fully lie-flat beds and private dining options.

Enhanced Connectivity Through Partnerships

Qatar Airways’ strategic partnership with Virgin Australia further enhances travel convenience. Passengers arriving in Canberra can connect to major domestic destinations like Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, and Melbourne through Virgin Australia’s network. This collaboration aims to provide a more seamless travel experience for passengers across Australia.

The airline’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasized the company’s commitment to the Australian market. He stated the resumption demonstrates Qatar Airways’ dedication to connecting communities globally and providing world-class service. The airline has been steadily increasing its capacity and network in the region.

Industry Recognition and Future Expansion

The return to Canberra comes on the heels of significant industry recognition for Qatar Airways. The airline was recently named the World’s Best Airline by the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025 for a record ninth time. It also received awards for World’s Best Business Class, Best Airline in the Middle East, and Best Business Class Lounge.

The Australian aviation market has seen increased competition in recent years, with several international carriers expanding their services. This competition generally benefits consumers through lower fares and more travel options. The increased Qatar Airways capacity is expected to contribute to this trend. The availability of Starlink Wi-Fi is also a differentiating factor for the airline.

The resumption of the Canberra route is part of a broader trend of airlines rebuilding their international networks following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Demand for international travel has rebounded strongly, prompting airlines to reinstate suspended routes and add new destinations. Canberra Airport has been actively working to attract more international carriers to the city.

Looking ahead, the success of the resumed Canberra service will likely be a key factor in Qatar Airways’ future investment decisions in the Australian market. Monitoring passenger numbers and load factors on the route will be crucial. Further expansion of the airline’s Australian network, potentially including increased frequencies or new destinations, remains a possibility depending on market conditions and demand.

The long-term impact of the route resumption on tourism and economic activity in the ACT and surrounding regions will require further observation. However, initial indications suggest a positive outlook for increased connectivity and travel opportunities.
