The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2025 kicked off with a vibrant “Family Friday” at the Lusail International Circuit (LIC) on November 28th, drawing large crowds and setting the stage for a weekend of high-speed racing. Practice sessions for Formula 1, Formula 2, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East took place, alongside fan engagement activities and entertainment. The event marks Qatar’s continued role as a host for major international motorsport competitions.

Located in Lusail, Qatar, the LIC welcomed fans from around the globe for a day filled with on-track action and off-track experiences. The atmosphere was lively, with packed grandstands and a bustling Fan Zone offering food, games, merchandise, and interactive displays. This year’s event is particularly notable as Qatar is one of only six venues hosting the Sprint format in the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Qatar Grand Prix 2025: Friday Practice and Qualifying Results

The day’s racing began with the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East, where Taichi Watarai of Seven X Seven secured pole position in the first practice session with a time of 1:58.969. He continued his strong performance, claiming pole again in the second session with a faster time of 1:57.441. Caleb Sumich consistently placed second, demonstrating competitive speed throughout the day.

Following the Porsche sessions, the FIA Formula 2 Championship held its practice and qualifying rounds. Leonardo Fornaroli of Invicta Racing led the practice session with a 1:38.656 lap. However, the qualifying session saw Oliver Goethe of MP Motorsport take pole position with a 1:36.115, showcasing the increased competition.

Formula 1 Sprint Qualifying Highlights

The highlight of Friday was the Sprint Qualifying for the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2025. McLaren dominated the session, with Oscar Piastri achieving pole position with a blistering time of 1:20.055. This performance was a significant improvement over last year’s FP1 top time of 1:21.953.

George Russell of Mercedes pushed Piastri close, finishing just 0.032 seconds behind. Lando Norris, also of McLaren, secured third place despite a minor issue at the final corner. The strong showing from McLaren suggests they are a team to watch during the race weekend. The Sprint race format, designed to add excitement and unpredictability, will require drivers to maximize their performance in a shorter, more intense competition.

Beyond the track, fans enjoyed opportunities to interact with drivers and team managers during a Fan Forum, receiving exclusive merchandise. Paddock Club guests were granted access to a Pit Lane Walk and a guided Track Tour, offering behind-the-scenes insights into the world of racing. Entertainment continued with a performance by singer Seal at the Lusail Live Stage.

Transportation to the circuit was made easier with complimentary Metro passes and extended operating hours for the Doha Metro, alongside shuttle services from key stations. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide a convenient experience for attendees.

Saturday’s schedule centers around the 100km Sprint race, which will not require mandatory pit stops, promising non-stop action. The results of Sprint Qualifying will determine the starting grid for this event, adding further pressure on the drivers. The event continues to build Qatar’s profile as a destination for motorsports and tourism.

Looking ahead, the focus shifts to the Sprint race on Saturday and the main Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2025 on Sunday. The performance of teams during Friday practice will be crucial in informing their strategies for the weekend. Weather conditions and tire management will also be key factors influencing the outcome of the races.
