Doha, Qatar – The 12th annual World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) commenced today at the Qatar National Convention Centre, drawing over 4,000 global education leaders, policymakers, and innovators. This year’s summit focuses on “Humanity.io: Human Values at the Heart of Education,” exploring how to integrate human-centered principles into learning as technology rapidly evolves. Discussions centered on artificial intelligence, equitable access to education, and the preservation of linguistic and cultural identity in the digital age, aiming to shape the future of education.

The global gathering, a flagship initiative of Qatar Foundation, brought together representatives from more than 100 countries to address critical challenges and opportunities facing education systems worldwide. Attendees are seeking actionable strategies to ensure learning remains purposeful and relevant in an increasingly technological landscape. The opening day set the stage for continued dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.

Navigating the Future of Education with Human Values

A key theme throughout the opening day was the integration of artificial intelligence into education. A high-level plenary examined the potential benefits and risks of AI, with speakers emphasizing the importance of prioritizing human skills such as creativity, emotional intelligence, and ethics. According to participants, technology should serve as a tool to enhance, not replace, essential human qualities.

Financing Inclusive and Future-Ready Systems

The Ministerial Roundtable, led by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), focused on securing sufficient resources for inclusive and future-focused education. Senior government officials engaged in a discussion on national priorities and the need for cross-sector collaboration to address funding gaps and ensure equitable access. Several speakers highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving these goals.

Bridging the Digital Divide and Promoting EdTech Equity

Expanding digital access and tackling learning disparities driven by technology were central to the conversation in the “Bridging the Digital Divide” session. Moderated by WISE Program Lead Niamh Whelan, the session explored strategies for building inclusive EdTech ecosystems. Speakers shared models that bolster connectivity and foundational skills, particularly in low-resource settings, aiming to level the playing field in digital learning.

Preserving Linguistic Identity in the Age of AI

The summit also addressed the unique challenges and opportunities presented by AI for languages like Arabic. An Arabic-language session, “Reading in the Age of AI: How Is Arabic Content Produced, Consumed, and Distributed?” examined how AI is reshaping the Arabic publishing landscape. Panelists discussed the need for greater investment in developing AI systems tailored to the Arabic language, as well as platforms that preserve linguistic heritage while embracing innovation. The discussion pointed to a current underinvestment in regional AI development.

Reimagining Schooling for a Holistic Approach

Another significant focus was the need to move towards more learner-centered and holistic schooling models. The session ‘Innovating Schooling: Towards a Progressive Schools Movement’ examined emerging approaches that prioritize student agency, community engagement, and creativity. Participants underscored that holistic education should encompass spiritual, moral, and intellectual development to equip learners for a complex world.

Fostering Collaboration in Global Education

Recognizing the need for unified efforts, a final session convened leaders from global education platforms. Moderated by Dr. Asyia Kazmi, OBE, CEO Designate of WISE, the discussion centered on breaking down silos and strengthening collaboration in areas such as digital learning and data-sharing. Participants noted a decline in global advocacy for education, emphasizing the importance of presenting education as a shared societal value.

The WISE 12 Summit’s opening day demonstrated a strong commitment to reimagining education for the future. The summit continues tomorrow with further discussions aimed at translating these insights into practical strategies and scalable solutions. Future sessions will likely delve more deeply into specific implementation challenges and explore potential policy recommendations. The long-term impact of the summit will depend on the willingness of stakeholders to adopt and adapt the explored innovations within their respective systems.
