The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in Qatar has announced the recommencement of critical infrastructure work on the Roads and Infrastructure Project in Al Mashaf South. This resumption focuses on Packages 4 and 7, aiming to significantly enhance the road network and essential services for a rapidly growing residential area. The project is expected to benefit nearly 2,000 land plots designated for Qatari citizens, addressing increasing demands on local infrastructure.

Work had been paused, but Ashghal confirmed the restart this week, with initial phases involving site preparation and the removal of existing road surfaces. The project is strategically located in the Al Wukair/Al Mashaf area and northwest of Al Janoub Stadium, west of the Doha Expressway, impacting a substantial portion of southern Doha.

Al Mashaf South Road Project: Enhancing Infrastructure for Residents

The Al Mashaf South project is designed to accommodate the needs of a burgeoning population, according to Eng. Mohammed Al Rumaihi, Project Engineer in Ashghal’s Drainage Networks Projects Department. The initiative goes beyond simply laying asphalt; it encompasses a comprehensive upgrade of utilities and transportation links. This includes improved traffic flow, enhanced connectivity to public facilities, and increased safety for both residents and visitors.

Package 4 Details: Al Wukair/Al Mashaf Focus

Package 4, situated in zone 91 of Al Wukair/Al Mashaf, will directly serve approximately 522 residential plots. The scope of work includes the construction of a 23-kilometer road network, installation of 696 street lighting poles, and provision of around 2,806 parking spaces. Additionally, the package will incorporate 450 meters of dedicated pedestrian and cycle paths, promoting non-motorized transport options.

Underground infrastructure is a key component of Package 4. Ashghal plans to develop 21 kilometers of sewage networks, 27 kilometers of stormwater drainage systems, and a 13-kilometer treated wastewater network. These improvements are crucial for managing waste and preventing flooding, particularly during Qatar’s rainy season.

Package 7 Details: Proximity to Al Janoub Stadium

Package 7, located northwest of Al Janoub Stadium and west of the Doha Expressway, will cater to 1,464 land plots. This package features a 25-kilometer road network, 839 street lighting poles, and approximately 3,030 parking spaces. Like Package 4, it will also include pedestrian and cycle paths, extending 2.5 kilometers in length.

The underground utility work in Package 7 mirrors that of Package 4, with the development of 24 kilometers of sewage networks, around 25 kilometers of stormwater drainage, and an 8-kilometer treated wastewater network. These networks are vital for supporting the increased residential density in the area and ensuring sustainable water management.

Currently, crews are focused on preparing the sites and removing existing asphalt layers to facilitate the installation of new infrastructure. Deep excavation is also underway to lay the pipes for the stormwater and sewage systems. This preparatory work is essential before the road construction can proceed effectively.

Ashghal is prioritizing the use of locally sourced materials for the project, with approximately 85% of materials originating from Qatari suppliers. This includes gabbro, lighting poles, signboards, drainage pipes, asphalt, prefabricated manholes, concrete, and reinforcing steel. This commitment to local sourcing supports the national economy and reduces the project’s carbon footprint. Ashghal has been a key driver of infrastructure development in Qatar, particularly in preparation for major events like the FIFA World Cup.

The completion of the Al Mashaf South road project is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility within the area. The project’s success hinges on continued coordination between Ashghal and local contractors. While a specific completion date has not been announced, stakeholders will be monitoring progress on the infrastructure networks and road construction phases. Future updates will likely detail any potential challenges or adjustments to the project timeline.
