The travel landscape in the United Arab Emirates is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by a shift towards more meaningful and experience-driven journeys. According to Anastasia Yanchenko, CEO of The Visa Services, UAE tourists are now prioritizing cultural immersion and personal growth when selecting their travel destinations.

This change in consumer preferences is reflected in the growing popularity of countries that offer unique cultural experiences, such as Japan, Georgia, and South Korea. Japan, in particular, has emerged as a top destination, attracting travellers who crave both tradition and innovation.

New Era of Travel from the UAE

The UAE’s new era of travel is characterized by a desire for authenticity and depth. Travellers are seeking destinations that offer more than just luxury and traditional vacation experiences. Countries like Georgia, with its mountainous landscapes and welcoming locals, are becoming increasingly popular among UAE residents looking for a restorative getaway.

South Korea has also surged in popularity, driven by the global fascination with K-culture. The country’s vibrant cities, rich cultural heritage, and unique blend of traditional and modern experiences are attracting a new generation of tourists.

Experiences Over Excess Expenses

Recent data from Skyscanner’s 2026 Travel Trends Report indicates that UAE residents are shifting their travel spending from luxury shopping to wellness, culture, and connection. Over half of travellers now purchase beauty and skincare products abroad, while nearly half plan spa treatments during their trips.

A significant 83% of UAE travellers make it a point to visit local supermarkets to experience daily life, and 92% are seeking mountain escapes for clean air and wellness. This trend suggests that travellers are prioritizing quality experiences over quantity, and investing in how they feel, not just where they stay.

Personalised and Purposeful Travel

The advent of digital platforms and flexible booking alternatives has given UAE travellers the ability to make more independent, last-minute, and personalized travel decisions. Travellers are now planning holidays that reflect their individual values and interests, rather than following fixed itineraries or tour packages.

This shift towards personalized travel is driven by a desire for authenticity and self-expression. UAE travellers are using travel as a means to express their identity and curiosity about the world, and destinations are becoming mirrors of their values and interests.

As the travel landscape continues to evolve, it is likely that UAE travellers will continue to prioritize experiences over luxury, and seek out destinations that offer cultural immersion and personal growth. The next step in this evolution will depend on various factors, including changes in consumer preferences and advances in technology.
