The passing of former US President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100 has led to an outpouring of tributes from European leaders who have hailed his legacy as a champion of peace, democracy, and human rights. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Carter’s moral leadership and his global contributions to advancing peace, health, and democracy worldwide. European Council President António Costa described Carter’s legacy as an inspiration and highlighted his dedication to human rights and peace. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commended Carter as a tireless champion for peace and human rights, emphasizing his decisive role in resolving conflicts that changed the course of history.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed their heartfelt condolences and admiration for Carter’s commitment to social justice, human rights, and peace. Macron praised Carter as a steadfast advocate for the rights of the vulnerable, while Starmer highlighted his role in brokering the Camp David Accords and his dedication to social justice and human rights. Orbán specifically acknowledged Carter’s contribution to Hungary by returning the Holy Crown to the Hungarian people, which gave hope to freedom-loving Hungarians.

Carter’s legacy in transatlantic relations is also significant, with his presidency marking a crucial era in US-European relations during the Cold War. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to NATO and emphasised the importance of collective defence against Soviet influence. Carter’s call for European allies to increase defence spending was part of his strategy to maintain Western unity and uphold the ideals of human rights. His focus on human rights also had a significant impact in Eastern Europe, as his moral leadership put pressure on the former Soviet Union and advanced the cause of freedom in regions under authoritarian control.

The tributes from European leaders highlight Carter’s lasting impact on global peace, democracy, and human rights. His dedication to social justice, human rights, and peace has been praised by leaders across Europe, who have described him as an inspiration and a tireless champion for peace. Carter’s role in brokering key peace agreements, such as the Camp David Accords, his commitment to social justice and human rights, and his unique contributions to empowering oppressed nations have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. As a leader who served during a critical phase in history, Carter’s advocacy for peace, democracy, and human rights has earned him a place of honour in the hearts of people around the world.
