The Saudi Heritage Commission recently announced the registration and documentation of 198 new archaeological sites in the National Antiquities Register, bringing the total number of registered sites to 9,317. This initiative aims to preserve the national heritage and increase cultural awareness about the importance of archaeological sites in Saudi Arabia. The registered sites span various regions of the Kingdom, with the Hail region leading with 50 sites, followed by Makkah, Qassim, Al-Jouf, Madinah, and Tabuk regions. Riyadh region has eight sites, Jazan region added five, and Asir, Najran, and the Northern Borders each registered two sites, with the Eastern Province registering one site.

The registration of these sites is based on the Antiquities and Urban Heritage Law to protect sites of historical and cultural significance and document them appropriately. The Heritage Commission’s efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to preserving and reviving the national cultural heritage, providing researchers and enthusiasts with reliable data on the locations and contents of heritage and archaeological sites in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the commission aims to support scientific archaeological studies and showcase the historical value of the discovered sites, contributing to the global recognition of Saudi heritage.

The Heritage Commission acknowledges the vital role of local communities in discovering these sites, highlighting their significant contribution to the protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of awareness among future generations. The commission encourages citizens and expatriates to report new archaeological discoveries or any illegal activities affecting archaeological sites through various communication channels, including social media platforms, the Balagh platform, visiting commission offices, or calling the Unified Security Operations Center 911. This proactive approach aims to safeguard Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia boasts a diverse range of archaeological and historical sites that reflect its rich and vibrant heritage. The registration and documentation of these sites by the Saudi Heritage Commission underscore the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy and promoting awareness about the importance of archaeological sites. With over 9,000 registered sites, Saudi Arabia stands out as a treasure trove of historical and cultural landmarks, attracting researchers and enthusiasts from around the world.

The comprehensive efforts of the Heritage Commission in registering and documenting archaeological sites contribute to the protection and conservation of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage. By adhering to the Antiquities and Urban Heritage Law, the commission ensures that sites of historical significance are safeguarded and documented in a systematic manner. This approach not only preserves the unique identity of each site but also provides researchers and visitors with valuable insights into the Kingdom’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Local communities play a crucial role in the discovery and preservation of archaeological sites, underscoring the importance of community engagement in heritage conservation. The commission’s emphasis on citizen participation reinforces the collective responsibility of preserving Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage for future generations. By encouraging individuals to report new discoveries and illegal activities affecting archaeological sites, the Heritage Commission promotes a culture of stewardship and awareness that is essential for the long-term preservation of the country’s historical treasures.

As Saudi Arabia continues to register and document new archaeological sites, it reinforces its commitment to safeguarding its national heritage and promoting cultural awareness. Through these efforts, the Kingdom not only preserves its rich history and heritage but also contributes to the global understanding and appreciation of Saudi culture. By encouraging public engagement and collaboration, the Heritage Commission ensures that the legacy of Saudi Arabia’s ancient civilizations is protected and celebrated for generations to come.
