Noora Al Shahwani’s groundbreaking exhibit, A World Without Sight and Sound: Living the Experience, is currently on display at the Fire Station: Artist in Residence in Doha, Qatar. The exhibit, which runs until November 25, 2024, offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors to step into the shoes of individuals who are blind or deaf. By exploring a world without the senses of sight and sound, the exhibit aims to promote empathy and understanding for those with disabilities.

Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of Fire Station, has praised the project as a tribute to the blind and deaf members of the community and a valuable opportunity for the public to gain insight into their daily lives. The Fire Station is dedicated to supporting impactful performances and art initiatives that promote social cohesion and foster empathy through art. This exhibit showcases the power of art in bridging gaps between different communities and shaping the character of society.

The exhibit features two studios that simulate different sensory experiences. In one room, visitors will navigate with their eyes closed, guided by floor markings and canes to experience life without sight. The second room offers a glimpse into the world of deafness, with soundless videos projected to demonstrate how deaf individuals rely on visual cues. Visitors can attempt to lip read from silent screens to further understand the challenges faced by the deaf community.

Noora Al Shahwani, the visionary behind the project, is a Qatari artist and student at Qatar University specializing in Special Education. She has organized workshops focused on teaching the Braille language and collaborating with institutions like Fire Station and Qatar National Library. Her project demonstrates the transformative power of art in fostering understanding and unity among diverse communities.

The exhibit is open to the public at the Fire Station, Studio 101 and 104, with viewing hours from 9 am to 7 pm from Saturday to Thursday, and 1:30 pm to 7 pm on Fridays. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this thought-provoking experience and gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges faced by individuals who are blind or deaf. By stepping into their world, visitors can develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding for those with disabilities.
