His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Muscat issued a Royal Decree on Sunday, known as Royal Decree No. (58/2024), regarding the promulgation of the Media Law. The decree was presented before the Council of Oman for approval. According to Article (1) of the decree, the provisions of the Media Law attached to it will now be enforced. Article (2) states that the Minister of Information will issue the regulations of the Media Law and necessary decisions to implement its provisions. Until the regulations are issued, existing laws and decisions will continue to be implemented without affecting the new Media Law.

Article (3) of the decree cancels previous laws related to media including Royal Decree No. 49/84 on Publications and Publishing Law, Royal Decree No. 65/97 on the Law on the Censorship of Artistic Works, and Royal Decree No. 95/2004 on the Law of Private Radio and Television Establishments. Any laws that contradict or violate the new Media Law attached to the decree will also be cancelled. This is a significant step towards modernizing media regulations in Muscat and ensuring that there is a unified law governing all media activities.

The decree states that it will be published in the Official Gazette and enforced from the day following its date of publishing. This indicates that the new Media Law will come into effect immediately and all media organizations and individuals in Muscat will need to comply with its provisions. This demonstrates the Sultan’s commitment to updating and regulating the media landscape in Muscat in line with international standards and practices.

The new Media Law is expected to bring about significant changes in the media sector in Muscat. It will provide clarity and guidelines for media organizations and journalists, ensuring that they operate within legal boundaries. The law will also address issues such as censorship, publications, and broadcasting regulations, streamlining the process for media operations in Muscat. This will ultimately lead to increased transparency and accountability in the media industry.

Overall, the issuance of the Media Law by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik is a positive development for the media landscape in Muscat. It shows a commitment to modernizing media regulations and ensuring that the media operates in accordance with international standards. The law will help improve the quality of media content, protect the rights of journalists, and promote freedom of expression in Muscat. It is an important step towards creating a more open and democratic media environment in Muscat.
