The recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the BRICS summit in Russia’s Kazan has sparked criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy rejected Guterres’ visit to Ukraine due to his trip to Russia, where he refused to participate in the Ukrainian president’s Peace Formula summit but instead accepted an invitation from the Kremlin to attend the BRICS summit. This decision by Guterres has drawn ire from Kyiv, with Zelenskyy indirectly calling out the UN chief for choosing the allure of Kazan over upholding the norms of international law and the UN charter.

During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit, Guterres reiterated his stance that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine violates the United Nations Charter and international law. However, Zelenskyy has criticized Guterres’ decision to attend the BRICS summit, emphasizing that the world must continue to prioritize the rights of nations and international law. Zelenskyy has denounced Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including reports of plans to target nuclear plants, and has called for the BRICS countries to play a role in peace efforts. Despite Guterres’ participation in the BRICS summit, Zelenskyy remains committed to seeking justice and accountability for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has been vocal about Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, describing the war as “insane” and condemning the killing of innocent children in the country. He has stressed the importance of upholding the UN Charter and ensuring that Russia is held accountable for its actions in violation of international law. While Guterres’ decision to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan has been met with criticism, Zelenskyy has expressed gratitude for the support Ukraine has received from those who continue to stand with the country amidst ongoing conflict.

The conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the need for peace and stability in the region, with Zelenskyy calling for action to address the ongoing crisis and prevent further escalation of hostilities. As Ukraine continues to face challenges from Russian aggression, Zelenskyy remains committed to upholding the principles of the UN Charter and working towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Despite the controversy surrounding Guterres’ trip to the BRICS summit, Zelenskyy’s focus remains on ensuring that the rights of nations and the norms of international law are upheld in the face of ongoing conflict and aggression in Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine remains a pressing concern for the international community, with ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and promote peace in the region. Zelenskyy’s rejection of Guterres’ visit to Ukraine underscores the importance of prioritizing the values of justice and accountability in the face of aggression and conflict. As Ukraine continues to face challenges from Russian aggression, Zelenskyy’s leadership and commitment to upholding international norms serve as a beacon of hope for those seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Despite the complexities of the situation in Ukraine, Zelenskyy remains steadfast in his determination to seek justice and peace for his country and its people.
