A group of MPs in Bahrain, led by Mohammed Jassim Olaiwi, have put forward a proposal to localise jobs across the kingdom. The aim is to replace expat workers with Bahraini citizens in professions such as engineering, tourism, and hospitality. The MPs argue that Bahraini graduates have the necessary qualifications and experience, and it is crucial to prioritize them in the job market, especially during current economic pressures. The proposal is based on the provisions of the Constitution and internal regulations of the Council of Representatives, giving MPs the authority to request changes in employment practices to favour local talent.

The proposal emphasizes the importance of giving Bahraini citizens the opportunity to prove their worth in a range of professions. The MPs highlight the capacity for responsibility that Bahrainis possess and stress the need for them to be given a chance to excel in various fields. By calling for a shift in employment practices that places local talent at the forefront, the proposal aims to ensure that Bahraini graduates are given fair opportunities in the workforce. The MPs believe that by prioritizing Bahraini citizens in professional roles, the future prospects of the local population can be safeguarded.

The proposal is directed towards Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, urging immediate action to address the growing concern over expat employment. MPs warn that the reliance on expat workers is jeopardizing the future prospects of Bahrainis and that urgent measures need to be taken to rectify the situation. The proposal has the support of other MPs such as Jaleela Al Sayed, Abdulwahid Qarata, Abdulnabi Salman, and Lulwa Al Rumaihi, indicating a united effort to push for changes in Bahrain’s labour market.

If the proposal gains traction, it could lead to a significant transformation in Bahrain’s job market, with Bahraini citizens occupying more professional roles traditionally held by expats. This shift towards localising jobs across various sectors would not only create more opportunities for Bahraini graduates but also contribute to the overall development and growth of the country. By giving Bahrainis the chance to showcase their skills and talents in different fields, the proposal aims to boost the confidence and capabilities of the local workforce, leading to a more self-sufficient and thriving economy. Through this initiative, the MPs hope to pave the way for a more prosperous future for Bahraini citizens.
