European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently visited Belgrade as part of her Balkan tour, where she met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to discuss Serbia’s progress toward EU membership. Von der Leyen reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to Serbia’s European future, stating that being a member of the EU signifies peace and prosperity. The visit is a part of von der Leyen’s trip to aspiring EU member states in the Western Balkans, emphasizing the EU’s dedication to enlargement in the region.

As part of her tour, von der Leyen also visited Bosnia earlier in the week, offering support to the nation as it works on reforms necessary for EU membership. The countries in the Western Balkans, including Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia, all have varying levels of advancement in their applications for EU accession. Despite the frustrations with the slow process, recent geopolitical events like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have encouraged European leaders to push for these nations to join the EU.

Last year, the EU presented a €6 billion growth plan for the Western Balkans in a bid to boost the region’s economy and speed up their integration into the bloc. However, this assistance is subject to the implementation of necessary reforms to align their economies with EU standards. President Vučić expressed Serbia’s commitment to speeding up its EU accession process, as the country has been an EU candidate since 2012. The Commission recently approved reform agendas for Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia, marking a significant step towards receiving the growth plan funds.

The European Commission’s approval of the reform agendas indicates progress in the Western Balkans’ journey towards EU membership, with the focus on aligning their economies with EU regulations. Von der Leyen’s visit to the region aims to reassure these nations of the EU’s continued support for their European aspirations, despite the challenges they face. The EU’s commitment to enlargement in the Western Balkans underscores the importance of stability and prosperity in the region, highlighting the benefits of EU membership for these countries.

In conclusion, President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Belgrade and other Western Balkan countries demonstrates the EU’s dedication to supporting their path towards EU membership. The region’s progress in implementing necessary reforms to align with EU standards is vital for their integration into the bloc. The recent approval of reform agendas by the European Commission marks a significant step forward in the Western Balkans’ journey towards EU accession. With continued support and commitment from both the EU and the aspiring member states, the region can look forward to a future of stability, prosperity, and closer ties with the European Union.
