The Strategic Food Security Facilities (SFSF) at Hamad Port in Doha, Qatar, are nearing completion and will soon be operational. These facilities have been designed to store rice, sugar, and edible oil to support three million individuals for up to two years. Eng. Nabil Al Khalidi, Executive Director of the Hamad Port Project, mentioned that final inspections are underway, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is working towards awarding a tender for operating the facilities. The SFSF project is expected to be ready for use by all concerned parties within a few months.

In 2017, the Ministry of Transport was tasked with overseeing the construction of the Strategic Food Security Facilities in Qatar. After extensive studies and consultations with relevant partners, an agreement was reached to establish storage facilities for rice, edible oils, and sugar with various capacities. These facilities are designed to operate efficiently within a two-year timeframe and cater to a target population of three million individuals. The SFSF aligns with Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy and will contribute significantly to enhancing the country’s reserve capabilities.

Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy for 2018-2023 has been instrumental in advancing the nation’s food security system. It focuses on sustainable development of local agricultural production, diversification of foreign trade sources, and establishing a strategic reserve of food commodities within the country. The upcoming revised version of the strategy for 2024-2030, aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, aims to further strengthen the country’s food security measures based on stakeholder feedback and recommendations.

The Ministry of Transport, responsible for overseeing the development of Qatar’s Strategic Food Security Facilities at Hamad Port, has ensured that the project adheres to global standards and best practices. The facilities incorporate the latest technologies to improve storage, packaging, transportation, and handling capabilities. Qatar has implemented various programs to enhance its strategic reserves and formulate effective food security policies, recognizing the critical role of food security in ensuring national security and economic stability.

As Qatar progresses towards addressing food security challenges, the completion of the Strategic Food Security Facilities at Hamad Port represents a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to strengthen its food security measures. These facilities will not only enhance Qatar’s reserve capabilities but also solidify its position as a regional leader in strategic stock sufficiency. By aligning with the National Food Security Strategy and incorporating stakeholder feedback, Qatar is poised to further enhance its food security measures in the coming years.
